Fencing Set for NCAA Championships
3.26.21 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - After a shortened regular-season, the Temple fencing team is ready for the 2021 NCAA Championships hosted by Penn State. This will be the first time each of the Owls have competed at NCAAs, with last year's championship being canceled due to the COIVD-19 pandemic.
The selections were announced by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee on March 18, with senior Eva Hinds (sabre), sophomores Zoe Turner (sabre), Margherita Calderaro (epee) and Sarah Park (epee), and freshman Elizabeth Novoseltseva (foil) all being tabbed. This is the second-straight year that Calderaro has been selected.Â
The overall field is comprised of 144 competitors from 20 member institutions. Pennsylvania State University will host the championships at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, March 25-28, 2021.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
The opening rounds of the NCAA Championship will begin on March 27, with epee being at 9 a.m., foil to begin at 11 a.m., and sabre to begin at 1:30 p.m. Rounds 4 and 5 will be on March 28 at 9 a.m. for all three weapons, with the semifinals round to begin at 1 p.m.Â
