Calderaro, Hinds Finish in Top-8 at NCAAs
3.28.21 | Women's Fencing
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After two days of competition against the nation's best, the Temple fencing team earned a seventh place finish among the 17 women's teams at the NCAA Championships. Two Owls earned top-8 finishes, with senior Eva Hinds tying for seventh in sabre and sophomore Margherita Calderaro finished sixth in epee.
Calderaro's finish is the highest individual finish in program history for an epeeist, and this is the first time in program history that the Owls have earned two top-8 finishes.
Hinds tied for seventh with Joy Yun of Stanford after winning 13 bouts, while Calderaro finished sixth after winning 14 bouts.
Freshman Elizabeth Novoseltseva (foil) finished tied for 13th place with nine bout wins while sophomore Sarah Park (epee) came in 16th after earning eight bout wins. Sophomore Zoe Turner (sabre) earned a 17th place finish with seven bout wins.
"This was a great experience for such a young team and it was nice to see our lone senior finish in the top-8," head coach Dr. Nikki Franke said. "I think the experience our ladies gained will only pay off as they move forward in their careers at Temple. As a team, it was great to see improvement as the weekend went on and to see them never give up. Our ladies have worked hard throughout the season so a weekend like this is all we can ask for."
