Golf Sits in 4th Place after First Day at Connecticut Cup

4.1.21 | Men's Golf

ELLINGTON, Conn. – Senior Dawson Anders shot a two-over 74 to lead Temple Golf to a fourth place showing after the first day at the Connecticut Cup Thursday.  As a team, the Owls were 14-over par, nine off the lead in the 12-team field at the three-day tournament being held at the 6,936-yard, par-72 Ellington Ridge Country Club.

Recapping the Day
> Anders had a pretty even day, making par on 13 holes, including the first five of his round.  He had had two birdies and two bogeys over the next eight holes before a double-bogey on the par four 16th hole pushed his to two-over for the day.  He leads the Owls and is tied for eighth overall.
> Senior Peter Bradbeer was next for the Owls, shooting a three-over 75 to tie for the 15th. The Bucknell transfer had three birdies on the day, but that was offset by four bogeys and a double-bogey on the par three 17th.
> Unlike Anders, junior Conor McGrath was up and down during his round, making a team-high five birdies, but seven bogeys and a double bogey saw him finish with a four-over 76 and tied for 27th.
> Sophomore Graham Chase was one-over after birdies on 11 and 12, but struggled at the finish with bogeys on four of the last five holes to end his round with a five-over 77 and tied for 33rd.
> Junior Buddy Hansen had his toughest outing of the season (83, t-69th) to round out the Owls five-man rotation while sophomore Andrew Curran had an 85 (t-75) while playing as an individual.

The Field
> Boston College leads the field with a five-over 293.
> Host UConn is second at 298 with Drexel (301) one shot ahead of Temple (302).
> Hartford's Manuel Romero, playing as an individual, leads the field with a one-under 71.

Statistically Speaking
> Temple tied Boston College for the second most birdies (13) on the day.  UConn topped the field with 15.
> McGrath tied for the individual lead with five birdies and tied for the best average (4.50) on par 5 holes.
> Anders also had a 2.58 average on par-3 holes, the best in the field.
> Bradbeer was the team's top golfer on par 4s (4.06, t-4th) and par 5s (4.67, t-3rd).

Quotable
"We have to learn have to finish," said Temple coach Brian Quinn.  "Over the last three holes we were nine over par, the last five holes it was 12 over.  If we play the we are capable down the stretch, we would be leading right now. They need to trust how good they are and trust their ability. Once they do that they are going to play great golf."
