Field Hockey Set For BIG EAST Tournament

PHILADELPHIA - After qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2016, the Temple field hockey team will face the No. 1 seed UConn Thursday afternoon in the semifinal round of the tournament.Â
Scouting Temple
> The Owls are 8-9 after the conclusion of the regular season, improving on its 2019 regular-season record of 7-10.Â
> Temple is on a three-game winning streak, sweeping Villanova and topping La Salle 4-0 to close out the regular season.Â
> Junior Nienke Oerlemans and graduate student Veronika Novakova lead the team with four goals each, while Taylor Alba (3), Kerrie Lorenz (2), and Cassie Romanczuk (2) round out the multiple-goal scorers. Seven other Owls have found the back of the cage this season, with Kaitlyn Cummins, Caitlyn Amsden, and Myrthe Schuilenburg all recording their first career goals.
> Novakova leads the team in shots with 24, while Kerrie Lorenz ranks second with 18 and Claire Thomas is third with 17.
> Cristina Carotenuto has recorded 62 saves to rank fifth in the BIG EAST and five clean sheets this season to lead BIG EAST in shutouts per game.

>Â The Huskies are 9-1 (8-1 BIG EAST) with its lone loss coming against Liberty in a 4-0 neutral site defeat last month.
> UConn's last three games have been canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the Huskies' program.
> The team last faced Villanova three weeks ago, scoring 11 goals in a pair of shutout victories.
> UConn is fifth in the nation in GAA (0.60), allowing just six goals this season all of which were scored by Liberty.
> The team leads the nation in scoring average (4.70) and scoring margin (4.10), with Sophie Hamilton's 1.50 goals per game also leading the nation.Â

>Â This will be the 18th meeting between the teams, with UConn holding a 14-2-1 series advantage.
> The Owls are on a 13-game losing streak against the Huskies, with Temple's last victory in the series coming in a 5-1 decision in 1989.
