Temple Cheer Wins National Championship

PHILADELPHIA – In a year that the Temple University spirit squad was unable to perform at athletic events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the teams not only survived, but thrived with the Cheerleaders winning the program's first National Championship and Diamond Gems placing fourth nationally.
The Owls Cheerleaders won their championship in the All Girl Division IA Game Day event at the 2021 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championships held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. On April 27-28.
"I was just excited that we could have a season at the beginning. I was not sure we could travel to nationals and when we found out we could go it was something to celebrate," said Temple Head Cheerleading coach Jenna Komosinski. "We placed second last year and we used that to motivate us. Winning a National Championship for the first time in program history, especially against some reputable programs, it was a great way to end the year."
The Owls edged Mississippi's All Girl squad, 98.2834 to 97.0834. Louisiana Tech placed third in the event.
The Temple Diamond Gems also made some noise, placing fourth in the category, Division IA Hip Hop, behind Memphis, Kentucky, and Cincinnati. The Gems also finished sixth nationally in the categories of Division IA Jazz and Division IA Game Day.
"The fact that the year started off on such a crazy note with not being able to have full practices. Our teams split up into two gyms due to number limitations. Then we finally got back together to start the spring semester but had only three months to practice and get ready for nationals. To overcome all of that and have out best finish ever was amazing. I am really so proud of our teams," said Spirit Squad Director/Head Diamond Gems Dance Team coach Jennifer Keller.
