Men’s Soccer Dominates with Defense to Earn 0-0 Draw Against No. 10 Seton Hall
8.26.21 | Men's Soccer
South Orange, N.J. – The Temple men's soccer team (0-0-1, 0-0-0 AAC) opened the season with a statement draw against No. 10 Seton Hall (0-0-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST). The match was highlighted by a brilliant performance by Goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski. The keeper made three saves in overtime, including a game-saving stop on a Seton Hall penalty kick.
How it Happened
>The Pirates attempted to break the scoreless tie first with a ball fired from the top of the box where it sailed towards the high-center of the goal. Gawronski corralled it with ease for his first save of the season.
> The Owls had their first offensive fleury beginning with a shot from Andres Charles. The midfielder had a strong chance from the right side of the box, but the ball swerved wide of the cage. Only two minutes later, sophomore Mike Eijgendaal had his own shot attempt that missed the goal.
> In the 33rd minute, Gawronski had one of his best plays of the night. Seton Hall fired off what looked to be a perfect ball curling towards the top left of the goal. The redshirt-freshman made a leaping play on the ball and managed to tip it towards the crossbar and redirect it to bounce off the woodwork and out of play.
> Temple began dominating the pace of play to open the second half. The Owls had four unanswered shots. The first two came from freshmen Danny Moya and Luka Kozomara, both missed the goal. The next two came from Eijgendaal. The forward rifled one towards the goal where it was saved by the Seton Hall keeper.
> Freshmen Alex Marin kept the Owls attack humming with a laser on net. The shot was corralled by Seton Hall.
> The Temple backline held strong in the final 20 minutes. Despite Seton Hall controlling possession and earning three corner kicks, Temple did not allow a shot on goal for the remainder of regulation.
> The first overtime saw the Pirates fire two shots to the center of the cage. Gawronski saved both with ease.
> In the 97th minute, Seton Hall was awarded a penalty kick chance for the golden goal. The shooter fired a bullet on target for the left side of the goal, but Gawronski dove for the ball and turned away the shot for his sixth and final save of the night.
> Temple had three shots in their final push, all off-target. Neither team was able to get a shot on target in the final overtime period to yield a 0-0 draw.
Game Notes
> Spencer Patton, Marques Antoine, Gyuwon Chong, Chaim Roserie, Kyle Hellmann, Tessho Koyabashi, Luka Kozomara, and Kemali Green all debuted for the Cherry and White.
> This was the fourth straight overtime match Temple has played in dating back to last season.
> Four yellow cards were issued in this match, two on each side.
> With his clean sheet today, Gawronski now has three clean sheets in only eight career starts.
From the Coach
> "We've recruited really talented players that give us a lot of depth and we utilized that depth today. It shows the growth of our program that guys who are true freshmen, guys that came off the bench in a game like this and performed. That's awesome, I'm so proud so the group and it shows where we are as a team." -- head coach Brian Rowland.
