Volleyball Drops Tough Match to Norfolk State at Tiger Invitational

TOWSON, Md. – Temple dropped a tightly-contested match to Norfolk State, 3-1, in its first of three matches at the Tiger Invitational Friday. The Owls, who were playing away from home for the first time this season, fell to 2-4 while the Spartans evened their record at 3-3.

How It Happened

Trailing 11-9, Temple won eight of the next nine points to open a 17-12 lead in the first set. The Owls would never trail the remainder of the set, extending their lead to six (21-15) before closing out the 25-21 win.
Set two was even closer as neither team could get an advantage over two points until the Spartans, trailing 22-21, scored the final four points to take a 25-22 decision.
Temple started set three strong, opening an 11-5 lead following a four-point run. Norfolk State climbed out of its hole by scoring eight of the next 11 points to cut the deficit to 14-13. The set stayed basically even until again NSU ran off the final four points to win 25-23.
The fourth and final set saw NSU jump out to a 7-0 lead would extend the margin to double-figures, 15-5 and 16-6, before the Owls regrouped. Temple ran off eight straight points with Gem Grimshaw making three kills in the run to cut the deficit to 16-14. Norfolk State, however, held off the charge, allowing Temple to get no closer that two points in closing out the match 25-19.

Individual Highlights

Katerina Papazoglou posted a double-double with 10 kills and 13 assists.
Grimshaw led the Owls and tied for match honors with 18 kills while also adding eight digs.
Patricia Zielinska had 30 assists with Nikki Shimao adding 17 and 10 digs.
Falanika Danielson led the Owls with 18 digs.
