Gymnastics on the Road to Take on No. 23 Iowa State at Chows Winter Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 30 Temple gymnastics team hits the road on Saturday for the Owls' first away meet of the season. The Cherry & White will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete at the Chows Winter Classic against No. 23 Iowa State.

ABOUT CHOWS WINTER CLASSIC
More than 1,500 gymnasts from around the country will compete in USAG levels 3-10 and Xcel, Monday through Friday at Chows. Saturday will feature the first-ever collegiate meet at Hy-Vee Hall, featuring the Owls and the Cyclones. This meet is the 19th annual Chows Winter Classic and serves as a qualifier for the 2022 Nastia Liukin Cup for the youth levels.
 
LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR
Despite the 193.450-194.50 loss to No. 29 Penn State during the Keystone Classic, Temple picked up its first win of the season against Penn 193.450-191.300. It took the Owls nine meets a season ago before picked up their first victory of the season. The Cherry and White had the top marks on two of the four events, including a 48.725 on the floor and a 48.500 on the beam.
 
Four freshmen debuted for the Owls, earning lineup spots. The quartet included freshman Hannah Stallings, Summer Ruskey, Anna Hill, and Jewel Clark.
 
Freshman Hannah Stallings added her first career all-around victory by defeating a pair of Penn State gymnasts with a score of 38.900. Stallings. Stallings would win her first career event title on beam with a 9.8 mark. The Raleigh, N.C. native also added a 9.725 on vault, 9.650 on bars, and 9.725 on the floor.
 
Brooke Donabedian tied Stallings for the beam event title with a 9.8, her seventh career all-time mark of 9.8 or better.
 
Senior Ariana Castrence led Temple and tied for fourth overall in the meet with a 9.8, her 15th overall mark of 9.8 or better on the bars event.
 
Cyrena Whalen was a late addition to the beam lineup. The sophomore finished with a strong score of 9.7.
 
The Owls closed the overall scoring deficit on the final rotation with a team score of 48.725 on the floor. It was the veteran trio of Julianna Roland, Tori Edwards, Faith Leary, who had a score of 9.775.
 
SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
Iowa State finished the 2021 season at No. 20 nationally, the fourth-straight season the Cyclones have finished in the Top 25, the second-longest such streak in program history.

The Cyclones recorded the two highest team scores of the Jay Ronayne era last season, notching a 197.050 at the Big 12 Championships and a 196.825 vs. No. 1 Oklahoma.

Iowa State returned all but two from last year's squad, a team that posted 33 scores of 9.9 or higher, the most by a Cyclone team since 2006.
