Gymnastics Heads To LIU for Sunday Dual Meet

ONE TOUCH WARMUP

The Owls added a win against Penn at the UNH Tri-Meet when they scored a season-high 195.825 against the Quakers' 192.875 but fell to the host team New Hampshire Wildcats 195.825-196.450.

 

Temple goes into this weekend's dual meet with a 3-0 all-time record against the Long Island Sharks.

 

This season, the Owls have an average team score of 194.600, good for No. 34 in the country, while LIU is No. 51 with an average of 192.588.

 

The 195.825 team score tops the 2020 season-opening score 195.575 against Illinois, marking the highest team score in program history for the month of January.

 

Hannah Stallings picked up her third straight all-around win at last weekend's tri-meet at UNH as she tallied the third-highest score in program history (39.275). Stallings would add career-highs on all four events, including 9.8's or better on floor, beam, and vault. On Wednesday, the Raleigh, N.C. native earned her second career EAGL award as she earned her first-ever Gymnast of the Week. 

 

Three of the four rotations, including vault (48.950), beam (49.450), and floor (49.100), saw the Cherry and White earn their highest team scores of the season.

 

The Owls combined for 10 9.8's or better in the meet, including their first 9.9's of the season from Julianna Roland and Hannah Stallings.

Summer
Ruskey, Julianna Roland, and Ariana Castrence made their season debut on the beam. The three gymnasts scored a 9.7 or better, including a pair of 9.875 scores from Roland and Castrence, the highest marks this season for Temple.

Four of the six gymnasts scored 9.7 or better during the rotation on the bars. Sophomore Cyrena Whalen had a team-high of 9.750, matching her season-high. In addition, Hannah Stallings improved her personal record during the rotation with a 9.725. Senior Caitlin Gray also improved her season-high score to 9.7.

The Owls scored the highest mark on the floor of the three teams with a 49.150 compared to New Hampshire's 49.100 and Penn's 48.750.

Five of the six gymnasts scored a 9.7 or better on the floor, including four Owls with a 9.8 or better. Veterans Faith Leary and Tori Edwards and sophomore Brooke Donabedian led the Owls with a season-high 9.875, tying them for third overall during the meet and giving them the highest marks for Temple this season. TU scored the highest mark on the floor of the three teams with a 49.050 compared to the Wildcats' 48.950 and the Quakers' 48.900.

Roland and Hannah Stallings added their first event title on the vault when both Owls scored a 9.9 in the final rotation. Sophomore Mackenzie Aresta scored a career-high 9.8 in her season debut on Sunday. Sarah Stallings and Castrence added scores of 9.7 or better.

 

OWL ABOUT TEMPLE

Last weekend's 195.825 team score topped the 2020 season-opening score 195.575 against Illinois, marking the highest team score in program history for the month of January.

 

Temple ranks third of the eight EAGL teams, averaging 194.600 in three meets.

 

Hannah Stallings is ranked third in the EAGL and 51st in the nation with a 39.017. Stallings 39.275 at the UNH Tri-Meet is the third-best score in school history, tying her with teammate Ariana Castrence's mark from 2020.

 

As a team, Temple is the best in the conference on the floor with a 48.867 average score. In addition, the Owls have recorded 12 scores of 9.7 or better in 18 overall routines.

 

SCOUTING THE SHARKS

The last time out, LIU collected its first-ever overall meet win as a gymnastics program, while it set a new team school record. The Sharks took down the Yale Bulldogs in a meet that came down to the final event, 194.200-193.875. 

 

In the meet victory, Lauren Miller had the highest score for the Sharks on the vault with a 9.725. In the second rotation, sophomore Mara Titarsolej led LIU to a school-record 48.700 on bars as she secured the event win a 9.90. Freshman Ilka Juk led the team on beam with a personal-best 9.825 in the third rotation. Amanda Loo the Sharks as she anchored the team with a 9.800, the highest score in the rotation. 

 

LIU is at the bottom of the league's team rankings in all four events. On the floor, they are averaging a 48.417. On the bars, the Sharks have averaged 48.175. On the beam, they have averaged 48.117, and on the floor, a 48.850. Ella Castellanos is the only Shark to be ranked in the top 20 of any of the four events. Castellanos has averaged 9.742 on bars.
