Maryland Eastern Shore Stuns Temple, 86-78, in Non-Conference Finale

PHILADELPHIA – Maryland Eastern Shore stunned Temple, 86-78, in the Owls non-conference finale at the Liacouras Center Tuesday. The Owls fall to 6-7 on the season while the Hawks improve to 5-7.
Khalif Battle and Zach Hicks led five double figure scorers for Temple with 15 points each. Hysier Miller and Nick Jourdain added 11 each while Damian Dunn, who left the game late in the first half with a head injury, scored 10.
Da'Shawn Phillip led all scorers with 18 points for UMES. The Hawks also featured five double figure scorers as Nathanial Pollard, Jr. (14, 10 rebounds), Donchevell Nugent (13), Chace Davis (11) and Kevon Voyles (11) also contributed in the win.
First Half
> Temple jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first two minutes and would extend it to nine points, 16-7, on a four-point play by Battle with just over 14 minutes to play.
> The Hawks then ran off nine straight points, tying the game on a three by Davis with 12:22 on the clock.
> A three-pointer by Nugent gave UMES its first lead, 21-20, and the Hawks would later extend it to eight, 31-23, on a 10-3 run capped by a Troy Hupstead layup with 7:25 to play.
> The Hawks would extend the margin to nine, 38-29, two minutes later, before Zach Hicks and Dunn hit consecutive threes to make it a one possession game, 38-35, at the four-minute timeout.
> Temple would retake the lead at 42-41 on a Battle alley-oop to Jourdain with 1:32 remaining.
> Hicks then drained a three to put Temple up by four (45-41) before the Hawks closed the half with two free throws.
Second Half
> Kevon Voyles hit a three-pointer to start the second half, giving UMES a brief 46-45 lead. Jahlil White made a driving layup and Battle drained another three to put Temple back on top, 50-46.
> After a Kur Jongkuch basket made it 54-50, the Hawks scored 12 unanswered points, the last a banked in three from the top of the key by Davis to make it 62-54 with just under 13 minutes to play.
> After Miller drained two from the line, UMES ran off five straight points, the last on another Davis three to extend the margin to 70-58 and forcing a Temple timeout.
> The Hawks kept the Owls at bay, taking its largest lead, 77-62, on a Zion Styles layup with 6:29 to play.
> The Owls answered with five straight, the last a Miller three, to make it 77-67 and force a UMES timeout. It was the start of a 11-2 Temple run, cutting the deficit to 79-73 with 2:10 remaining.
> Temple would cut the margin to three on two Miller free throws and a Battle driving layup, but the Hawks answered with a goaltended basket by Voyles to make it 82-77.
> Hicks would make a one of three free throws to cut it to four, 82-78, but UMES would hold on for the win.
Game Notes
> Battle tied his career high with four steals in the game.
> Dunn left the game late in the first half with a head injury. His status is day-to-day.
> UMES outrebounded Temple, 40-29, and had 17 offensive rebounds.
