Temple Gymnastics Hosts Yale on Friday for Pink Meet

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls gymnastics team returns to McGonigle Hall for the first time since early January as they host the Yale Bulldogs on Friday night at 7 p.m. The meet is scheduled to air on ESPN+.
ONE TOUCH WARMUP
Temple dropped last weekend's dual meet at North Carolina by the score of 195.425-195.600.
Out of the six meets this season, it was the third time the Owls have earned a 195 or better.
Graduate student Faith Leary picked up the team's 14th event win of the season with a 9.875 on the floor, her sixth win on the floor in an Owl leo.
Sophomore Renee Schugman had a fantastic day in her two events, scoring a 9.8 or better. Schugman led off on both the beam and floor as she captured a season-high on the beam with a 9.8 and tallied her second straight 9.8 or better on the floor.
On beam, three gymnasts, including Hannah Stallings, Ariana Castrence, and Schugman, posted 9.8's or better. Stallings recorded a career-high beam with a 9.875, followed by Castrence's 9.825 and Schugman's 9.8.
Stallings also put together her best performance of the season on vault with 9.750.
Speaking of Stallings, her streak of five straight all-around victories ended at UNC as she finished with a 39.000 behind the Heels duo of Lali Dekanoidze (39.550) and Julia Knower (39.250).
Temple goes into this weekend's dual meet with a 20-9 all-time record against the Bulldogs. The last time the two teams competed against one another came on March 1, 2020, at the Terrapin Invitational, as Yale knocked off the Owls by the score of 194.100-194.375.
The Owls have an average team score of 194.946, good for No. 42 in the country. Yale comes in No. 66 with an average of 192.863.
LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR
Bars
TU began on bars to start the dual as they tallied a 48.570. Sophomore Brooke Donabedian made her first appearance on bars this season as she tied the team-high with a 9.775. Freshman Sarah Stallings also tied for the team-high (9.775), just missing her career-high of 9.800. Both Donabedian and Stallings tied for fourth overall with UNC's Briana Greenlow.
Vault
Sarah Stallings and senior Julianna Roland led the Cherry and White with matching 9.775's. Stallings earned her second-best output this season (9.7) and marked fifth straight meet with at least a 9.7. Roland's score also marked the sixth straight score of 9.7 or better in six meets. Stallings and Roland tied for fifth on the vault behind UNC's Cory Shinohara first-place score of 9.875.
Floor
The Owls closed the deficit to .400 as they scored 49.025 on the floor, the third time they would score 49-plus this season. Leary's first-place score of 9.875 was the third time this season. It was the second straight meet she would register this exact score, giving her an event win for the first time this season. Three TU gymnasts, including Leary and sophomores Renee Schugman and Donabedian, put together scores of 9.825 or better on the night. Donabedian and Schugman tied for fourth overall with 9.825's.
Beam
In the final rotation, three of the six Owls scored 9.8's or better for a team score of 48.975, their second-highest team score on beam this season. Hannah Stallings tied for second overall with a career-high 9.875. Senior Ariana Castrence and Schugman followed behind in the overall event standings with scores of 9.825 and 9.800, good for fifth and sixth place. Donabedian and Roland also added scores of 9.7 or better.
OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
Temple ranks fourth of the eight EAGL teams, averaging 194.946 after six meets this season.
The strongest event by far this season for the Temple Owls has been the floor exercise, where they have averaged a 48.996, best in the EAGL. On Feb. 4 at the Towson Quad Meet, the Cherry and White tied the school record on the floor with a 49.375. The Owls have four gymnasts ranked within the top 20 of the conference, including sophomore Brooke Donabedian, averaging a 9.821 and ranked fourth. Graduate student Faith Leary jumped up three spots from last week's standing, where she is ranked seventh with an average of 9.812. Tori Edwards is ranked 11th in the conference with a 9.804 average. Before last weekend's UNC dual, Edwards earned scores of 9.875 in each of her previous three routines. All-arounder freshman Hannah Stallings rounds out the Owls within the top 20 as she comes into this weekend, ranked 17th in the league with a 9.783 average. Together as a team, the Owls have knocked out 31 9.7's or better scores this season.
Speaking of Stallings, the freshman is ranked seventh in the EAGL with a 38.942 in the all-around, jumping, .012 points from last week's weekly rankings. The Raleigh, N.C. native had her streak of five straight all-around competitions broken last weekend in Chapel Hill, where she finished third overall with a 39.000. Stallings 39.250 on Jan. 30's at the LIU Dual Meet tied her for the fifth-best score in school history, tying her with teammate Ariana Castrence's mark from 2020. She also tied Castrence's mark in her third meet of the season with the third-highest score in school history with a 39.275. On Jan. 23, Stallings also became one of three gymnasts in program history to record the highest score (9.9) in a vault routine.
Over on the vault, the team ranks third in the EAGL with a 48.900. On Feb. 4 at the Towson Quad Meet, the Cherry and White tied the school record on the vault with a 49.150. Senior Julianna Roland has been the most consistent on the TU squad, with a 9.812 average. Roland is one of three gymnasts in school history who has achieved the school record 9.9 mark, including doing it twice this season.
On bars, the Owls are sixth in the conference but improved their average score improved by .50 from a week ago for a 48.500. Sophomore Brooke Donabedian is the Owls' leader on the bars with a 9.775 but has only competed on the apparatus once this season. This season, senior Ariana Castrence has been on the bars six times and is 19th in the league with a 9.742. Sophomore Cyrena Whalen remained within the top 25 of the EAGL, averaging a 9.725.
Temple has struggled the most on the beam this season but made strides this past weekend with a 48.975, improving their score from 48.510 to 48.588. Compared to the Feb. 4 Towson Quad Meet when Temple had just two scores of 9.7 or better, the Owls came out of this weekend with three 9.8's or better, including a career-high 9.875 from Hannah Stallings. On Jan. 23 at the UNH Tri-Meet, the Owls recorded their highest score of the season with a 49.050.
SCOUTING YALE
On Sunday, the Yale Bulldogs (193.625) won the Tonry Invitational as they defeated three other teams, including Southern Connecticut State (189.400), Bridgeport (187.450), and Springfield (182.625).
Kendall Toy earned the GEC Gymnast of the Week as she had an excellent weekend for the Bulldogs during the Tonry Invite as she tied for first on bars with a 9.850, part of the second-best bars total (49.050) in school history. Toy also tied for first on beam (9.825) and floor (9.775) while knocking out personal best on bars and beam.
Along with Toy, three other Yale Gymnasts, including Raegan Walker, Sherry Wang, Lindsay Chia won their respective events, giving the Bulldogs a clean sweep on all four displays during the four-team meet.
On the vault, the Bulldogs finished one, two, three in the standings as Walker earned her second vault title this season with a 9.775, followed by teammate Lindsay Chia who finished in second place with a close 9.750. Rounding out the top three was Oren Aviad with a 9.7.
So far, the Bulldogs have been strongest on the bars this season as they rank 41st in the nation. Last week, Yale scored above their season average by scoring a 49.050. All six gymnasts chipped in with a 9.675 or better, and four of the six finished within the top five overall. With Toy and Wang tying for first place on the event with a 9.850, Sarah Wilson (9.825) and Walker (9.800) scored above a 9.800.
The beam was a challenge for the Bulldogs during the Tonry Invitational, scoring 47.500, but Walker and Toy tied for the event win with a pair of 9.825's.
The Bulldogs finished off the meet strong on the floor, where four of the six gymnasts scored above a 9.7. Chia and Toy scored a 9.775 on their routines to pick up shares of the victory. Wilson (9.750) Wang (9.700) rounded the Bulldogs team of individuals who scored above 9.7.
