No. 9 Fencing Goes 5-2 in Day One at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - In the first day of a two-day meet at Northwestern, the No. 9 Temple fencing team went 5-2 and topped a ranked team for the sixth time this season.

Meet Summary
> In the first meet of the day, No. 6 Ohio State topped the Owls 20-7.
> Temple bounced back, earning a dominating 27-0 win over Cleveland State in round two.
> Round three saw the Cherry and White defeat No. 12 Stanford 17-10.
> The Owls posted two wins in the fourth round with a 26-1 win over Lawrence and a 24-3 win over Wayne State.
> The team dropped the next match to No. 2 Notre Dame 19-8 before closing out the day with a 19-8 victory over Boston College.

Individual Highlights
> The foil and epee squads went 5-2 while the sabre squad went 4-3.
> Alexandra Weinberg led the saberists with an 8-5 mark, while Emma Pincus went 6-1 and Arwen Gormley went 7-6.
> In foil, Gretl Merges went 9-1 and Anastasia Yankovskiy posted a 7-4 record.
> Every epeeist posted a record of .500 or better, with Naomi Ross going 8-2, Ashley Cherry going 7-2, and Cindy Long going 5-2.

> "We like coming to this meet every year because it is a true test of our conditioning and training. By the end of the meet, we will have fenced 12 schools in total. Today we faced two top-10 schools in Notre Dame and Ohio State. They are strong competition and were really challenging, but it gave our young team the experience they need to keep improving as the season continues.
