Gymnastics Looks to Defend League Crown at 2022 EAGL Championships

The Owls have won three straight conference championsips

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's gymnastics team looks to defend their league championship on Saturday in Washington, D.C. as they take part in the 2022 EAGL Championships in the Charles E. Smith Center against NC State, North Carolina, Pitt, LIU, Towson, New Hampshire, and this year's host, George Washington.

This year's meet will be split in two sessions, with the lower four seeds, Temple, LIU, New Hampshire, Pitt competing in the matinee session starting at noon ET, while the top four seeds, NC State, UNC, Towson, and GWU will complete the tournament, starting at 7 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be available on ESPN+.

LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR
Vault
Temple scored a 48.500 on the vault last week in Minneapolis as senior Julianna Roland led the Owls with a 9.800, her seventh score of 9.8 or better this season. Freshman Hannah Stallings was the only other Cherry and White performer above a 9.700, as she posted a 9.725, the eighth time this year she's achieved that mark this season.
 
Bars
The Owls scored a 48.325 at Minnesota on the bars, with freshman Sarah Stallings leading the team with a 9.800. It was the fifth time she put together a 9.8 or better. Senior Ariana Castrence was the only other Owl gymnast to receive a score of at least 9.775. The Waldorf, Md. native, has scored a 9.775 or better in eight meets this season.
 
Beam
Roland also led the team to a 48.025 as she added her second 9.800 score. It was the second straight meet she's added at least a 9.800 and the fourth time this season. Brooke Donabedian pitched in with the second-highest individual score for Temple with a 9.725, marking the sixth meet out of seven she's put together at least a 9.700 score.
 
Floor
Veterans Tori Edwards and Faith Leary scored 9.8's on the floor like they have the for the whole season. The team accumulated a 48.775, led by Edwards' 9.825. It was the ninth time she scored at least a 9.825 on the floor this year. Leary added s 9.8 or better for the seventh time this season when she scored a 9.8.
 
OWL ABOUT TEMPLE
Temple drops to No. 46 in the country and seventh in the EAGL with an NQS of 195.595. After last weekend's tri-meet at Minnesota, the Owls remained the same after a 193.625 score.
 
The strongest event by far this season for the Temple has been on the vault. The team ranks first in the EAGL with an NQS of 49.085, with four gymnasts ranked in the top 20. On Feb. 25, Temple set the school record on the apparatus with a score of 49.200. Seniors Julianna Roland and Ariana Castrence are the leaders for the Cherry and White, with both gymnasts tied for fourth in the conference with an NQS of 9.845. During that meet at No. 29 NC State, Roland turned in a record-breaking school performance with a 9.925. On March 3, in a meet with No. 33 Maryland, Bridgeport, and SCSU, Castrence, won a share of the vault competition with a score of 9.900. Both Castrence and Roland combined for six wins on the vault this season. Freshman Hannah Stallings is tied for 17th with an NQS of 9.800. Earlier this season, the freshman scored a 9.9 in just her third collegiate meet at UNH on Jan. 23. Fellow freshman Anna Hill makes it to the top  20 rankings to end the regular season after pair of career-high 9.850's on Feb. 27 and March 3.
 
Speaking of Stallings, the Raleigh, N.C. native is ranked sixth in the EAGL with an NQS 38.875 in the all-around. She won five straight all-around competitions before her streak was broken on Feb. 12 in Chapel Hill, where she finished third overall with a 39.000. Stallings 39.250 on Jan. 30 at the LIU Dual Meet tied for the fifth-best score in school history, tying her with teammate Ariana Castrence's mark from 2020. She also tied Castrence's mark in her third meet of the season with the third-highest score in school history with a 39.275.
 
Over on the floor exercise, Temple has the second-best EAGL NQS of 49.170. The Owls have tied the school record with a 49.375 twice this season. On Feb. 4 at the Towson Quad Meet, the Cherry and White tied the school record on the floor with a 49.375, and just last week (March 6), during Sunday during Senior Day, they came up big with the same score. During those two meets, 11 of the 12 routines were capped by scores of 9.825 or better. On March 6, Donabedian put on a record-setting performance as she tied Anne Koerner's 2000 mark with a 9.95. So far this season, the team has four gymnasts ranked within the top 15 of the conference. Donabedian leads the way, ranked fourth with NQS of 9.875. The Maple Valley, Wash. native, has been the most consistent gymnast of the four with 10 consecutive 9.8's or better, including the school record score. Tori Edwards is tied for the fifth-best NQS with a 9.860. Faith Leary is tied for 10th with an NQS of 9.850. Sophomore Renee Schugman comes into the weekend ranked 20th where earlier in the season, she scored 9.800 or better in four straight meets and six of the last eight.
 
On beam, the Cherry and White enter this weekend with a NQS of 49.025, ranking them fifth in the league. Before last week's meet in Minnesota, four of the six gymnasts either tied or set career-highs during Senior Day on March 6. Castrence and Roland earned a share of first place with matching 9.925's. Castrence earned a career-high in that meet, while Roland pulled off the score for the second time this season.
 
The Owls are the seventh-best team in the conference on the bars, with an NQS of 48.865. Against NC State on Feb. 25, Temple would set the school record with a 49.300. Castrence is the lone Owl in the top 20 with an NQS of 9.815, placing her 19th in the league.
 
ALL CONFERENCE OWLS
Temple placed six gymnasts on the 2022 All-EAGL team, tallying nine selections. Seniors Ariana Castrence and Julianna Roland and freshman Hannah Stallings led the Owls team with a pair of All-EAGL honors. Both Castrence and Roland earned first-team selections on the vault and second-team selections on the beam, while Stallings added a first-team selection in the all-around and a second-team selection on the beam.
 
Fifth-year gymnasts Faith Leary and Tori Edwards with sophomore Brooke Donabedian earned selections on the floor for Temple. Edwards and Donabedian earned first-team selections, while Leary added a second-team honor.
 
ALL ACADEMIC OWLS
The Owls led the conference 20 of the 23 Owls earned a spot on the EAGL All-Academic Team. With the breakdown of five seniors, two juniors, six sophomores, and seven freshmen on the team.
 
SCOUTING NC STATE
Conference NQS leader NC State comes into EAGL Championships with a 196.330. Earlier in the week, the Wolfpack had seven gymnasts earn 11 accolades. Emily Shepard led the team with three first-team nods, including the bars, beam, and floor. Lauren Rutherford added a pair of first-team selections on the bars and floor. Gabrielle Diaz, Macy Jennings, Carina Jordan, Alexis Ortega, and Nicole Webb added one apiece. 
 
SCOUTING TOWSON
The Tigers have the second-best NQS in the conference with a 196.245. 10 Towson gymnasts combined for 12 All-EAGL Conference honors. Clara Hong earned three, while Lauren Bolen, Camille Vitoff, Steph Macasu, Jenna Weitz, Amy Stewart, Elise Tinsler, Mia Davis, Grace Vaillancourt, and Emerson Hurst all picked up one plaudit.
 
SCOUTING UNC
The Tar Heels head into EAGL Championships after going a perfect 7-0 in conference action, with the third-best NQS of 195.995. On Monday, North Carolina had five gymnasts, including Julia Knower, Elizabeth Culton, Lali Dekanoidze, Isabelle Schaeffer, and Bri Greenlow, combined for 11 All-EAGL honors.
 
SCOUTING GWU
The host, George Washington, will be included in the evening session with the fourth-best NQS in the conference (195.495). Deja Chambliss, Rachel Katz, Kendall Whitman, Sarah Zois, Simone Banen, and Olivia Zona combined for nine All-EAGL selections.
 
SCOUTING PITT
Pitt finished the season with the fifth-best NQS in the EAGL while recording a 195.860. Four Panthers, including Katie Chamberlain, Hallie Copperwheat, Jordyn Ewing, Sidney Washington, were recognized with 11 honors. Copperwheat led the team with four total, including first team on the bars, beam, and all-around and a second-team recognition on the beam.
 
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
UNH enters this weekend with the sixth-best NQS in the EAGL. The Wildcats recorded a 195.625. Kylie Gorgenyi led a group of four gymnasts with a combined six EAGL honors earlier in the week. Gorgenyi was tabbed with first-team honors on the floor and bars. Hailey Lui earned a first-team selection on the beam and a second-team on the floor. Alyssa Worthington and Kylie Kratchwell added one apiece.
 
SCOUTING LIU
LIU enters this weekend with a NQS of 194.300, the eighth-best NQS in the EAGL. In addition, the Sharks had a pair of gymnasts earn honors for 2022, including Mara Titarsolej earning a first-team All-EAGL selection on the uneven bars after her record-breaking regular season in 2022. Ilka Juk finished the year on the second-team All-EAGL for beam.
