Track and Field Shines as Strachan Breaks School Record

4.23.22 | Women's Track and Field

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Temple track and field team found its rhythm this past weekend in the Virginia Challenge as the team set multiple personal and season bests. Continuing her impressive season, long jump and triple jump specialist Tannekee Strachan broke her own triple jump school record from earlier in the season with a leap of 12.98m, which puts her in the top-10 in the NCAA in the east region.

Meet Highlights (Virginia Challenge):
The Owls started out hot on day one of Virginia Challenge as sprinter Marissa White set a personal-best and took first-place in a talented field of the 400m dash. Meanwhile, Strachan placed top-10 in the meet in the long jump with a leap of 5.90m, a personal-best.

A few hours later, Laura Nicholson kept up momentum for the Cherry & White as she took first-place in the 1,500m run with a personal-best time of 4:20.94.

To open up day two, Temple's "A" relay set a season-best time of 46.91 to take fifth-place right before freshman Amira Green placed in the top-10 in the high jump (1.61m).

Directly after, Strachan set the school record in the triple jump once again, breaking her own record from earlier in the season at the Big 5 Meet when she leaped to a mark of 12.66m. This time, Strachan jumped to a mark of 12.98m, taking second place at the meet. The jump is the 10th best mark in the NCAA east region this season, and the second-best mark in the AAC.

Later on, Nicholson continued to perform as she set another personal-best, this time in the 800m run with a time of 2:09.13 to take fifth place.

Wrapping up the meet, Temple raced to a season-best time of 3:47.11 to place in the top-10 in the 4x400m relay.

Quotable (Head Coach Elvis Forde):
"I am very pleased with how the team did in Charlottesville these past few days as it seems like we are starting to find a rhythm as we get more healthy towards the end of the season. Tannekee breaking the school record is fantastic as she is starting to jump with more consistency. I was very impressed with Laura as well who set two personal-bests in the 1,500 and 800-meter runs, and the sprints group more than did their part as well as Marissa set a personal-best and placed first while the relay teams set season-bests also."
