Sprint Medley Breaks School Record at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple track and field team did not have to travel very far this weekend for competition as the Owls competed in the 126th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field from April 28-30. The sprint medley relay team shined for Temple, breaking the school record.

Meet Highlights (Penn Relays):
The distance runners started the event for the Owls on Thursday evening as Laura Nicholson, Michelle Joyce, Erik Kain, and Sean Egan took to the track. Nicholson placed 13th in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:22.25 while Kain placed 8th in the 10,000m run, racing to a time of 30:14.85.

The next day, Tannekee Strachan and Nicole Castor competed in the long jump and high jump, respectively, as multiple Owls competed on the track.

After Chelby Elam raced in the 100m dash and again in the 4x100m relay alongside Christal Pommells, Jewel Ofotan, and Chidumga Nkulume, she was ready to hit the track once again in the sprint medley.

Elam was joined by Pommells, Marissa White, and Helene Gottlieb as the four Owls raced to a third-place finish, narrowly breaking the outdoor school record with a time of 3:52.53. The previous record, set last year, consisted of a time of 3:52.79.

The Cherry & White closed Friday evening qualifying for the 4x400m championship by posting a time of 3:49.81. The next day, the Owls team of Mary Olayinka Ilelaboye, White, Pommells, and Kwanda Knight one-upped themselves, racing to a season-best time of 3:43.92.

Strachan was the only other Owl to compete on the final day as she placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 12.87m.

The Temple track and field team takes a week off of competition before traveling to Wichita, Kan. for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
