Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 21 SMU, 1-0
9.22.22 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (0-4-4, 0-2-0 AAC) fell to No. 21 SMU (6-1-3, 1-1-0 AAC), 1-0 on Thursday evening in the Owls first match of a four-game home stretch. Despite an extremely strong second half offensive effort from the Owls, the Mustangs would be able to ride out their early lead to close out the match with a win.
How it Happened
From the Coach
"I'm very happy with our performance tonight," head coach Nick Bochette said. "In a backwards way, playing so well can make it more frustrating to not get the result we wanted. We did so much right tonight and I'm really proud of the way the team showed up after a long six-game road stretch. SMU is one of the top teams in our conference and I think our performance tonight will only increase our confidence and potential as we move forward."

How it Happened
- SMU struck early, netting the go-ahead goal in the 13th minute of play after Alina Khan redirected a shot from teammate Sammy Nieves into the back of the net.
- The Owl defense bounced back immediately, only allowing one more Mustang shot for the remainder of the half to keep the match 1-0.
- The Cherry and White entered the second half with intensity, finding an offensive burst in the 53rd minute of play. Carly Steinberg made contact with the ball in the box, sending a grounder towards the goal, but Mustang keeper Samantha Estrada came up big with the save.
- Temple persisted, finding two more quality chances just moments later. Emily Kavanaugh sent a ball to the back post on a corner, finding the head of Roisin McGovern, who sent a ball towards net, but it sailed just wide.
- Just a few minutes later, Sumaya Togba found herself on a fast break, with just the keeper to beat. A shot and keeper deflection resulted in another opportunity, but it sailed just wide, finishing the match with the 1-0 SMU advantage.
