UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 11 Temple fencing team opened the 2023 calendar year with collegiate play at the Penn State Invitational Sunday, going 2-3 and topping No. 3 Columbia.
Meet Summary
> The Cherry and White saw its most impressive win of the season to open the day, topping No. 3 Columbia 15-12.

> The Owls dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 match to host No. 6 Penn State before closing out the day in a 17-10 loss to No. 10 Duke.
Individual Highlights
> Constança Dimas led the foilists with a 4-0 mark, while Anna Novoseltseva (foil) went 6-6 including a 3-0 record against No. 3 Columbia.
> Saberist Eva Ventura's 7-4 mark led the squad, going 2-0 against Haverford and 3-0 against No. 6 Penn State. Zoe Turner went 5-5 and Alexandra Weinberg went 4-4.
> Naomi Ross's 7-5 record and Margherita Calderaro's 7-4 record led the epee squad, with Cindy Long going 4-3.
Quotable
> "Today was a mixed bag! Starting off with a down to the wire victory over previously undefeated No. 3 Columbia was a real testament to what this team is capable of. Every fencer who took to the strip for us had at least one victory in that match and we came out on top in many 5-4 decisions. Against Penn State, we were again able to stay consistent and strong. I saw determination from our team but unlike against Columbia, we were unable to convert in enough of our 5-4 bouts. Today left us proud and disappointed at the same time, but what will fuel us moving forward is knowing that we are capable of understanding we must execute in key moments to achieve team victory." – head coach Jennie Salmon
