Gymnastics to Host LIU, Cornell, Bridgeport in First of Four Home Meets in 2023

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls' gymnastics team will host their first of four home events this season starting this Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. with a quad meet versus Cornell, LIU, and Bridgeport in McGonigle Hall. The Cherry and White will honor all returning alumni back to North Broad Street in a celebration of the 47 years of Temple gymnastics. Attendance for 2023 gymnastics meets will be free admission, but if you can't be in person, the meet will be shown on ESPN+.

ONE TOUCH WARMUP
  • Cornell finished third at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational in Washington, D.C. on Sunday as it scored a 189.900, finishing ahead of GEC foe William and Mary with a 188.575. Meet winner Nebraska scored 196.150, while George Washington followed in second with a 196.150.
  • Fellow EAGL conference mate LIU finished third at the Penn State quad meet last Friday where it finished with a 194.150. The Sharks followed the Penn State (196.000), Penn (194.900), but defeated SCSU (187.500).
  • On Sunday, the Purple Knights came in second place with a 188.275 in a tri-meet with Springfield College (186.875) and Rhode Island College (185.625).

ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
  • The Owls haven't hit their stride in 2023, starting with a 193.713 average after two meets this season. However, the Owls are No. 34 in the nation on both the bars and beam. On the bars, Temple has averaged 48.763 and on the beam a 48.738. The Cherry and White scored a season-high 48.900 in week one at the Keystone Classic in Pittsburgh and in the same meet they scored their first 49 of the season with a 49.150 on the beam.
 
Bars
  • Temple sophomore Sarah Stallings has been the most consistent presence on the bars through the first two meets of 2023. Stallings has won two event titles for Temple on the bars with matching 9.850s.
  • Stallings enters week three tied for fourth in the EAGL, while tied for seventh in the northeast region. Additionally, Cyrena Whalen has averaged a 9.763 after two meets, picking up a season-high 9.825 during the Keystone Classic on Jan. 6. Hannah Stallings is the only other Owl gymnast to score at least a 9.7 average the first two weeks of the season. With a 9.738 average to start the season, Stallings has also added a season-high 9.775, also during the Keystone Classic.
  • As a team the Owls are ranked fourth in the northeast region with a 48.763. 
Beam
  • Statistically speaking, the Owls' beam team has been the best squad of the four for Temple. It's earned its first 49-plus score to start the season on Jan. 6 at the Keystone Classic with a 49.150. Three of the six gymnasts who have competed on the beam  this season are currently ranked in the top 20 of the northeast region.
 
  • Leading Temple on the bars after two weeks is junior Brooke Donabedian. The Maple Valley, Wash. native is ninth in the EAGL and tied for 13th in the northeast region, averaging a 9.800. Donabedian started off the season tied for a seventh-place performance as she recorded a season-high 9.825. Fellow beam mates, Madison Dorunda and Hannah Stallings are tied for 20th in region with a 9.750. Stallings is the team leader on the aparatus as she scored a season-high 9.87 on Jan. 6 at the Keystone Classic. 
 
  • The Owls are third in the EAGL and fourth in northeast region rankings after week two with a 47.738.
 
Vault
  • The last time out on the vault during the Keystone Classic, the Owls scored a season-high 48.375 with freshman Ashley Glynn leading the way for the second straight week, while adding her first career event victory. The rookie gymnast scored a career-high 9.850, Sarah Stallings was the only other Temple gymnast to receive a 9.700s during the meet. Last Sunday at New Hampshire, Stallings earned a 9.725, good for a top 10 finish with a tie for seventh.
 
  • With Glynn's 9.825, the freshman's average improved to a 9.800, ranking No. 11 in the northeast region.
 
Floor
  • Junior Renee Schugman scored a 9.850 last weekend in New Hampshire, giving her a tie for second place, and her 17th career 9.800 or better in her three-year career.
 
  • Temple has averaged a 47.888 on the floor and are 59th nationally. 
 
All-Around
  • Hannah Stallings was the lone gymnast to compete in the all-around last weekend at New Hampshire scoring a season-high 38.425. It was Stallings first all-around victory of the season and seventh of her career.
 
SCOUTING LIU
  • LIU's Mara Titarsolej returns for another season with the Sharks after and impressive 2022 seasons. Titarsolej earned 2022 first team All-EAGL on bars and was named EAGL Specialist of the Year after a record-breaking season, finishing with the highest NQS (9.930) among all EAGL gymnasts, and recording the first perfect 10 score in school history. Titarsolej went on to finish fifth at the NCAA Regionals and was named WCGA First Team All-American.
 
  • Last week at Penn State, Titarsolej tied for first place on bars with a 9.900 with Penn State's Cassidy Rushlow. 
     
 
SCOUTING CORNELL
  • Defending 2022 USAG all-around national champion, GEC co-Newcomer of the Year, four-time All-American Sydney Beers highlights the Cornell team in 2023. The sophomore enters her second season on the mats within striking distance of the school record of 39.225. Last season at the USAG Nationals, Beers scored a 39.125  at USAG nationals last spring.
 
  • Cornell had its best score to start the season since 2019 with a 189.900 last weekend at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational when seven gymnasts had top 10 efforts, led by Beers ninth on the vault (9.750) and 10th on the floor (9.775) and Kate Michelini with seventh on the beam (9.675) and 10th on the bars (9.700).

UP NEXT
  • Temple will go back out on the road for their next meet on Feb. 5 as they visit Yale in a dual meet.
