Women’s Tennis Kicks Off 2023 Campaign With Back-To-Back Matches This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's tennis (0-0) is set for a busy opening weekend as they travel to Richmond, Va., to face off against No. 62 VCU (0-0) at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 20 at noon. The Owls will return home just a day later, hosting West Virginia (0-0) on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 pm on Penn's campus.

THE OWLS
- Temple finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 11-6, going undefeated on their home court and finishing fifth overall in the American Athletic Conference.
- The Owls had a strong showing in the AAC tournament last year, but were ultimately eliminated in the first round by USF, falling 4-3.
- Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei have proved to be a force to be reckoned with, entering the season ranked No. 5 in the nations as a doubles pair. The duo had immense success this fall, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Championship, the first Temple pair to ever do so.
- The Rams enter the matchup ranked 62nd in the nation after completing the 2022 campaign with an 18-7 record.
- The squad is coming off back-to-back A10 Championships, while also making two NCAA appearances in the last two years.
- The duo of Yelizaveta Karlova and Victoria Matasova clocked in at No. 30 in the doubles ranking, posting a 6-2 record in fall play.
Scouting West Virginia
- West Virginia wrapped up the 2022 with a 7-17 record, failing to earn a conference victory, with a 0-9 record in the Big 12.
- The Mountaineers took part in the Big 12 Championship last season but were beat by No. 7 Iowa State in the opening round, 4-0.
- The doubles team of Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang secured the No. 1 position for the team last year, securing nine wins as a pair.
- The Mountaineers took part in five different tournaments and competitions this past fall in preparation for this season, including the ITA All-American Championship.
