Football Falls to SMU on Friday Night

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple football team (2-6, 0-4 AAC) fell to the SMU Mustangs (5-2, 3-0 AAC) on Friday Night by a score of 55-0. SMU's offense stole the show, with 563 yards of total offense. Elijah Deravil was a highlight for the Owls, recording a career-high 11 tackles including .5 tackles for loss.

How It Happened

  • On the opening drive of the game, LB Diwun Black forced and recovered a fumble that gave the Owls possession at their own 42 yard line.
  • With 4:31 remaining in the first quarter, SMU scored the first points of the game off a three-yard touchdown run by RB Jaylan Knighton to take a 7-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs extended their lead to 14-0 with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter, as QB Preston Stone completed a four-yard pass to WR Jordan Hudson.
  • At the 11:43 mark in the second quarter, SMU stretched the lead to 21-0 with a two-yard touchdown pass from Stone to TE RJ Maryland.
  • On the Owls' fifth offensive drive of the game, the team marched the ball 73 yards down to the SMU two-yard line, but the drive ended on a turnover on downs.
  • On the last drive of the first half, SMU added a field goal off the foot of K Collin Rogers, giving SMU a 24-0 lead at halftime.
  • The Mustangs added 17 points in the third quarter off a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown, a 21-yard quarterback scramble, and a 47-yard field goal.
  • SMU scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a seven-yard passing touchdown and a three-yard rushing touchdown.
