Owls Drop Heartbreaker to Rebels in Waning Seconds

11.22.23 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – All five starters scored in double figures, but a pair of free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining saw the Ole Miss Rebels slip past Temple 77-76 on Wednesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hysier Miller scored 21 in the contest.
  • Zion Stanford posted a career-high tying 14 in the game with a personal best seven rebounds.
  • In his first start of the season, Jordan Riley netted 10 with seven boards. Both totals were personal bests in a Temple uniform.
  • Matteo Picarelli was the fourth Owl in double figures, netting 14, nine of them in the second half.
  • Sam Hofman had his first game with 10 or more in a Temple uniform, tallying 11 with five assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing by eight with just under five minutes to go, the Owls came all the way back, taking a 76-75 lead on a pair of free throws by Miller with 1:39 remaining. After going scoreless in the next minute, Ole Miss connected on a pair of free throws with 9.2 seconds remaining before a last look from TU missed off the rim.
  • It was a close game early on as the Rebels held just an 11-9 lead after a pair of free throws by Stanford with 14:52 to go in the half. Riley was a key during the stretch with five points and three rebounds. Ole Miss got hot during the next couple of minutes, opening a 29-16 lead
  • Undeterred, Temple battled back as Miller scored five in a row to cut the gap to eight. The Rebels started to pull away again, but a 12-5 run by the Owls in the final five minutes of the frame sliced the lead to 38-33 at intermission. Picarelli fueled the run, scoring five of the points including his first trey of the game.
  • TU came out for the second half with energy as after Ole Miss opened the scoring, an 8-2 run by Temple was capped by a Riley putback dunk, chopping the lead to 43-41. The game remained at a four-to-six-point gap for the majority of the rest of the half. Down by eight, Temple continued to fight as back-to-back treys by Picarelli and Sam Hofman, once again sliced the edge to a pair, at 73-71 with 3:55 to go.
