Men’s Basketball Hosts “Elite Game” Against Tulsa on Sunday
2.18.23 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Temple Men's Basketball will honor the 30th anniversary of the 1993 NCAA Elite Eight Team on Sunday afternoon when the Owls host Tulsa (2 pm/ESPNU/1210 AM WPHT).
Members of the historic squad, one of five Elite Eight teams under Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney, will be in attendance and honored in a halftime presentation.
The 1992-93 team was the least expected of the five Chaney squads to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight.
The Owls struggled in the early part of the season and following a late January four-game losing streak found themselves at 9-9 overall.
Under Chaney's direction, and the leadership of senior captain Vic Carstarphen and the dynamic play of future NBA stars Aaron McKie, Eddie Jones and Rick Brunson, the Owls would come together and win six of their final eight regular season games to enter the postseason at 15-11.
Wins over West Virginia and St. Joe's set up an A-10 Final against UMass. The top-seeded Minutemen defeated the Owls, 69-61, but the NCAA Committee took into account the Owls strength of schedule, a hallmark trait of Chaney teams, and rewarded Temple with a #7-seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Jones and McKie would lead the Owls past #10-seed Missouri, 75-61, with 24 points each. McKie led Temple with 25 points in the next game, a win over Santa Clara and future NBA great Steve Nash, with Brunson adding 20.
Jones scored 26 points in Temple's Sweet 16 win over #3 seed Vanderbilt with the Owls' 15-3 second half run proving to be the difference. #1-seed Michigan and its Fab Five would prevent Temple from a Final Four defeating the Owls 77-72. Brunson scored 21 and had nine assists but all five Michigan starters topped double figures.
The Owls finished the season with a 20-13 overall record and ranked 13th in the coaches poll.
McKie, now the head coach of the Owls, and Jason Ivey, a freshman forward on the team and current member of the basketball staff, will obviously be at the game. They will be joined by Carstarphen, now the honorable Mayor of Camden, Rick Brunson, an assistant coach with the New York Knicks, and freshmen members of that squad, Derrick Battie, William Cunningham and Marco Van Velsen. Former longtime Director of Basketball Operations John DiSangro and team manager Chris Squeri will be in attendance along with Chaney family members: son John, Jr., grandsons, John III, and Sean Long, and great grandson, Jaylen Long.
