Men’s Tennis Prepares for Battle with Back-to-Back Matches This Weekend

2.2.23 | Men's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's tennis team (0-2) has a busy weekend ahead as they search for their first victory of the spring season. The Owls are scheduled to play in West Long Branch, NJ for a match against the defending MAAC champion Monmouth Hawks (0-0) on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4:00 p.m. The Owls will have a quick turnaround, heading back to Philadelphia for a match against Howard (0-0) at Penn on Sunday, Feb. 5 starting at 5:00 p.m.

The Owls:
  • This is the second time in as many years that Temple men's tennis started their spring season 0-2. Last year, the team responded by winning 5 of their next 6 matches.
  • Marin Delmas has been a cornerstone for the program over the past two seasons. This past fall, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championship and had the most individual wins last season including a 12-5 record from the first position.
  • Sophomore Hussein El Tawil had a great fall for the Owls going 5-2 in singles play and 3-2 in doubles. So far this spring, he and partner Louis Gorregues are 1-1.

Scouting Monmouth:
  • The defending MAAC Champions are welcoming the Owls to their home courts on Saturday to kick off their 2023 spring campaign.
  • Last year the Hawks finished 20-4 overall and earned themselves a spot in the NCAA tournament before falling to No. 14 Harvard, 4-0 on May 6.
  • Junior Charlie Penman was in the spotlight for the Hawks this past fall at the Navy Invitational as he swept his flight of matches winning four straight in singles play.
  • Last season, the Owls handed Monmouth their first loss of the season when Temple beat them 5-2 at Penn on Feb. 27, 2022. Temple's Marin Delmas was 2-0 on the day winning from the No. 1 position in singles in addition to securing a win from the No. 2 position in doubles play with partner Louis Gorregues.

Scouting Howard:
  • Howard will start their spring season on Thursday, Feb. 2, hosting St. Francis in Washington, D.C. for the home opener, before coming to Philadelphia to face off against the Owls.
  • The Bison finished last season with a 6-8 record and advanced to the second round of the MEAC Championship, sweeping No. 6 Norfolk St. 4-0, before dropping to No. 2 Morgan State just a few days later.
  • Sophomore Marcel Dawson had an excellent first season with Howard in 2022, going 6-1 in singles play to start the year. In doubles, he finished with a 7-6 record, winning his last two matches of the year with his partner Tory Bailey.
  • Tory Bailey was recognized for his accomplishments, being named to the All-MEAC Second Team at the end of last season.
