Gymnastics to Host Pair of Meets:Rounds Out 2023 Home Schedule

PHILADELPHIA – Temple gymnastics will round out their home season in a four-day span, starting on Thursday, March 2 at 4 p.m. as its hosts the first-ever "My Cause" Meet with No. 25 Maryland, No. 27 Towson and West Chester visiting McGonigle Hall. Three days later on March 5 at 4 p.m.,  Temple will put on Senior Day with Fisk University, Southern Connecticut State, and Ursinus visiting Philadelphia.  Both meets will be available on ESPN+.

ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
  • As we enter week nine, Temple finds itself No. 49 in the NQS rankings with a 194.920. On the four apparatuses the Cherry and White are No. 53 on the vault with a 48.655, No. 42 on bars with a 48.840, but have improved multiple spots beam and floor since the team's last time out.  On the beam, the Owls improved by eight spots from No. 46 to No. 38 with an NQS of 48.890, and from No. 59 to No.49 on the floor with a 48.910.
BARS
  • Sarah Stallings enters this weekend as the most consistent performer on the bars thus far this season for Temple. The sophomore is ranked 11th in the EAGL and the northeast region with an NQS of 9.840, while totaling four wins on the apparatus this season.  Two weeks ago during the Ken Anderson Invitational quad meet with NC State, Penn, and George Washington, Stallings set a new career-high with a score of 9.900.  In eight of the nine meets this season, the Raleigh, N.C. native has now added scores of 9.8 or higher, while putting together a 9.806 average.
  • Junior Cyrena Whalen joins Stallings as a notable performer on the bars this season. In five of Whalen's nine outings this season, she's scored at least a 9.8 or better.  The Buford, Ga. native has a NQS of 9.810 and has averaged a 9.731. Like Stallings, Whalen had an excellent Ken Anderson Invitational. During the meet, Whalen matched her career-high with a season-best 9.850.
  • Last weekend on Feb. 24 and Feb. 26, the Owls scored a 9.7 or better in 10 of the 12 routines. On Friday at North Carolina, Whalen was the lone Owls' gymnast to score a 9.8 or better. On Sunday at UNC, Ashley Glynn led the squad with a career-high 9.875, while Whalen and Stallings earned a 9.825 and 9.850 respectively.
BEAM
  • Temple had strong back-to-back meets on the beam last weekend as it scored a 48.775 and 48.975, respectively. On Friday at UNC, junior Brooke Donabedian and sophomore Madison Dorunda led the team with a pair of 9.825 scores. Just two days later at the LIU tri-meet, the Owls' Madison Dorunda and Ashley Glynn tallied career-highs with a 9.875 and 9.825, respectively.
  • Earlier this season on Feb. 10 quad meet at Towson, the Owls scored a season high with a 49.200, tying for the fifth-highest score in school history and their second 49-plus score of 2023.
  • Donabedian is one of the conference's best on the beam.  Earlier in the season, the Maple Valley, Wash. native has earned a pair of wins, including a career-high, 9.900 performance at Towson. Since then, she's duplicated that score at home on Feb. 19 during the Ken Anderson Invitational.
  • Madison Dorunda has added excellent routines over the past six meets, resulting in 9.8-plus scores each time. The Waterford, Conn. sophomore has averaged a 9.8375 over that span, while securing a personal-best score of 9.875 on Feb. 10 at Towson.
  • Donabedian has a 9.850 NQS is third  in the EAGL and fourth in the northeast region. Dorunda also joins Donabedian in the top 10 NQS regional rankings and EAGL with a 9.830.
VAULT
  • On Feb. 24 at UNC, Temple scored a 48.500 with Renee Schugman and Charlie Behner leading team with a pair of 9.750s and on Feb. 26 at LIU, Mackenzie Aresta scored her second career 9.8 tally, but the team struggled, scoring just a 48.150.  In their last meet home on Feb. 19 during the Ken Anderson Invitational, Temple scored a season-high 48.900. The Cherry and White had five of its six gymnasts score at least a 9.775 in the meet including,  Renee Schugman, Mackenzie Aresta, Charlie Behner, Madison Brooks, scoring a  9.775, while Anna Hill led the team with a season-high 9.8. 
  • Freshman Ashley Glynn leads the vault team this season as she's in the top 20 of the northeast regional rankings with a 9.795 NQS. In six of the nine meets thus far this season, Glynn has scored at least at 9.750, including a career-best 9.850 on Feb. 17 at the GW quad meet.
FLOOR
  • Individually, Donabedian has been the team's best performer on the floor with three event titles. This season the Maple Valley, Wash. native is ranked fourth in the EAGL and the northeast rankings with a 9.890 NQS. In three of her last four meets, Donabedian has scored a 9.925 three times in the last four meets, with a 9.825 being the other. Renee Schugman has also been a bright spot in the Owls' lineup as she's scored 9.825 or better in each of those four meets. Fellow floor mate, sophomore Summer Ruskey has added a career-high 9.875 three times this season, but two times in the last three routines.
  • The Owls set a new school record 49.400 on Feb. 19 during the Ken Anderson Invitational. During the meet each of the six gymnasts racked up scores of 9.825 or better, including career-highs from Schugman (9.925), Summer Ruskey (9.875), Glynn (9.850), Hill (9.825), and Dorunda (9.825).
ALL-AROUND
  • Over the last four meets, freshman Ashley Glynn has performed in all four events. On Feb. 26 at LIU, the Delaware native finished with a career-high 39.100.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
  • Josephine Kogler and Alexa Rothenbuescher are two  gymnasts to watch for No. 25 Maryland on Thursday during the "My Cause" Meet.
  • Kogler is tied for seventh in the Big 10 on the beam with a 9.875 NQS. Last weekend, at the Big Five Meet at Nebraska, Kogler finished third on the beam 9.900.
  • Rothenbuescher is tied for 15th on the floor in Big 10 with a 9.880 NQS. Just like Kogler, Rothenbuescher is tied for third on the floor in Lincoln with a 9.900.
SCOUTING TOWSON
  • The No. 27 Towson Tigers are led by Grace Vaillancourt and Isabella Minervini on bars.  Both are also ranked within the top five of the EAGL's bars standings, while Vallaincourt is third with a 9.900 NQS, while Minervini is fourth with a 9.890.
  • On the vault, Polina Belanovski is team's best as she's ranked third in the EAGL with a 9.870.
SCOUTING WEST CHESTER
  • Jordan Coleman and Sarah Eskew lead West Chester on the uneven bars in 2023. Both gymnasts rank in the top 10 of the GEC. Coleman is tied for fourth in the rankings with a 9.760 NQS, while Eskew follows in eighth place with a 9.715 NQS.
  • On the beam, the Rams have four gymnasts in the GEC rankings including, No. 5 Caitlyn Allen (9.735), No. 6 Madison Whitaker (9.720), No. 7 McKenna Kissinger (9.715), and No. 9 Anna Lacey (9.705).
  • Additionally, Kissinger is one of the conference's best on the floor as she's ranked third with a 9.800 NQS. Teammate Rose Fanara also has earned a top 10 ranking with a 9.750 NQS.
SCOUTING FISK
  • First-year program, Fisk University is one of three independent gymnastics programs in the country.
  • Of these independent programs, the Bulldogs have NQS leaders on the vault, bars, beam, and floor.
  • Aliyah Reed-Hammon is ranked first on the vault with a 9.740 NQS, Morgan Price has a 9.835 on bars, Liberty Mora has a 9.765 on beam, and Morgan Price is first on the floor with a 9.675.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • Angel Lee is the best on the SCSU beam team, ranking No. 2 in the GEC. On the season Lee has an NQS of 9.780.
  • The SCSU Owls have a pair of gymnasts ranked in the top 10 in the conference on the floor. Abby Royer is tied for fifth with a 9.750, while Hanna Zebdi is seventh with a 9.755.
  • Zebdi is also ranked eighth in the GEC on the vault with a 9.730 NQS.
SCOUTING URSINUS
  • In the NCGA East Conference, Ursinus' Sidney Scheiber is a top 10 performer on the floor where she is tied for sixth with a 9.675 NQS.
  • Teammates Taylor Cusick and Ashley Cromer are tied for 11th on the vault with a 9.490 NQS.
  • The trio of Alex Panetta, Adison Tanguay, Megan Matteucci are ranked with in the top 15 of the NCGA East on bars. Panetta is ranked No. 12 with a 9.280, Tanguay is No. 14 with a 9.205 NQS, and Matteucci is No. 15 with a 9.080.
UP NEXT
  • On March 12 at noon ET, Temple will compete at Maryland in a five-team meet. The field includes Towson, Yale, George Washington, and the host Maryland.
