Women’s Tennis Drops Third Match of the Spring Against Penn 5-2

3.19.23 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's tennis (10-3) suffered their third loss of the season to the Penn Quakers (9-4) by a final score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Hecht Tennis Center. The Owls battled against Penn without Maiko Uchijima in the lineup due to illness for a second straight match.

NOTES:
  • Temple started the day by winning the doubles point behind victories in the first and third positions. Jamie Wei and Thamara Frasser Kawaratani were paired together in the top spot without Maiko Uchijima in the lineup.
  • Evie Wei and Veronika Kulhava played from the third position for the first time this spring. The pair had played 10 matches together this spring prior all coming from the second position.
  • Jamie Wei earned the Owls their second point of the match winning from the third position. This was the first time Wei was called upon to play from the third position this spring, but she picked up her fifteenth singles victory of the season along the way.

QUOTE FROM COACH:
"It was a tough loss today against a very good Penn team. We played well in doubles and had some hard-fought matches in singles," coach Steve Mauro said. "It's difficult to play without Maiko in the lineup especially with others feeling under the weather which didn't leave us at full-strength. Overall, it was a good collegiate tennis match."

NEXT UP:
The women will now have the early part of the week off before visiting Princeton on Friday, March 25. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Jadwin Gymnasium.
