Women’s Tennis Preps for Three Matches in Three Days

3.23.23 | Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's tennis (10-3) prepares for a busy weekend ahead as they will visit defending Ivy League Champion No. 46 Princeton (8-6) on Friday, Hampton (5-6) on Saturday, and George Mason (7-3) on Sunday, March 26 as the end of the spring season nears.

THE OWLS:
  • Temple is most recently coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 74 Penn on Sunday, March 19. The Owls battled and won the doubles point but couldn't finish the job in singles play.
  • The most recent ITA rankings recognized Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei as No. 5 in the nation for their achievements in doubles play so far this spring season. Last week, they upset Delaware's top pair who were ranked No. 5 at the time.
  • Sena Takebe has been reliable for the Owls out of the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions this spring. She has a 8-4 record from those three spots while also finding success with newcomer Thamara Frasser Kawaratani from the third position of doubles play where they have a 5-1 record.
  • After the three-game weekend at hand, Temple women's tennis will play host to Rider and NJIT on back-to-back days at the TU Pavilion next weekend, March 30, and 31.

SCOUTING No. 46 PRINCETON:
  • Last season, the Tigers were crowned Ivy League Champions for the third consecutive year going 12-11 in the spring season. They picked up one additional win in the NCAA Regional tournament against Army before losing to No. 5 Virginia in the second round.
  • The Tigers are coming off a 1-2 west coast trip where they visited Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, and USC. The Tigers lost to LMU and USC in consecutive matches on March 16 and 18.
  • The Princeton women's tennis team had a busy fall competing in eight different tournaments or competitions.  They traveled to the Virginial Fall Invitational, the Wolfpack Invitational, and the Cissie Leary Invitational on top of hosting their own in the middle of October.
  • Princeton is led by senior No. 4 Daria Frayman who holds a 21-5 record this year which includes her tournament success. In the spring season, she is 7-0 in singles with all appearances coming in the first position. With her doubles partner, Neha Velaga, they are 3-1 from the first position, too.

SCOUTING HAMPTON:
  • The Pirates are currently on a two-game win streak after most recently defeating Queens University of Charlotte and St. Joes on March 14 and 15.
  • Before facing Temple on Saturday, Hampton will hit the road and visit George Mason two days before the Owls will play there on Sunday.
  • Hampton is led by Diana Starodubtseva who had a 5-3 record in singles this spring. She is 4-0 from the second position in singles play. In addition, Angelina Blinova is 4-3 in singles with all of her appearances being from the first position.
  • In doubles, Blinova and Sofia Sokolova have three wins combined from the first and second spots.
  • Hampton will make one more trip to PA in order to visit Villanova on Sunday, April 2 before preparing for the CAA Championships in late April.

SCOUTING GEORGE MASON:
  • Through the first week of mark, the Patriots were led by Taylor Garcia and Paige La who have seven singles wins between the two. La is seen most in the first position while Garcia is 4-1 from the second.
  • George Mason is currently 7-3 and on a two-game win streak defeating both Saint Louis University on March 15 as well as St. Francis University on March 17.
  • Last season, they finished 13-8 and lost in the first round of the A10 Championship to Saint Louis University on April 27, 2022.
  • The match on Sunday against Temple will mark only the second time both Temple and George Mason will face each other in women's tennis. The Owls won the first match on March 12, 2021 by a final of 6-1.
