Volleyball in Action Tuesday in McGonigle Hall Against Delaware State

8.28.23 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – Just 48 hours after its last match, the Temple volleyball team (3-0) will be back in action on Tuesday night as it hosts the Delaware State University in McGonigle Hall. The Owls look to carry their momentum of success against Hornets squad that finished 2-1 in the off Hofstra Tournament last weekend. The match is set for 6 p.m. ET and will be available on the ESPN+ app.

LAST WEEKEND
The Owls start this season 3-0 for the first time since the 2019 campaign, tying the fourth longest win streak to start a season in program history. The 2014 team started out 6-0. The 1983 started 7-0, while the 1976 squad went 13-0 to begin EAIAW play.

All three wins last weekend were highlighted by sweeps, a feat that has only been done twice in program history, 1976, 2019.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Davenport earned 2023 Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge MVP honors, while graduate transfer Avery Luoma and junior Patrycja Zielinska were also selections to the all-tournament team.

TWICE AS NICE
Senior Taylor Davenport opened the first weekend with 18 kills against Iona, a double-double versus LIU (20 kills, 10 digs), and 19 kills against Lehigh in the tournament clincher on her way to winning the AAC Conference Offensive Player of Week for Week 1. She becomes the first Temple player since to win the AAC Offensive Player of the Week since Izabella Rapacz in 2017.

Going into Tuesday's match, the senior is ranked second in the NCAA with 6.33 kills per set and 7.06 points per set, tied for fourth with 57 kills, and sixth with 63.5 total points.

The Columbia, S.C. native won the Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge MVP award, leading Temple to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2019. In each of the three matches, Temple won with sweeps. Davenport started in all three of those matches where she tallied a tournament-best 57 kills, while averaging 6.33 kills per set. She hit .333 on 123 attempts with just 16 errors. No other person on the team had more than 73 attempts.

TRANSFER EXPERIENCE
Going into this season, the additions of Avery Luoma and Olivia Vance will be pivotal to the growth of the Temple offensive scheme.

Luoma was voted to the Cherry & White Challenge All-Tournament Team this past weekend as she totaled 23 kills, while averaging 2.56 kills per set. The Phoenix, Ariz. native also added three service aces and three blocks in the trifecta of matches.

Luoma had spent four seasons at the Princeton University where she had totaled 519 career kills.  In 2022 with the Tigers, Luoma earned her second straight First Team All-Ivy League nod after appearing in 23 matches where she ranked third in the Ivy League and second on the team in points per set (3.81), and ranked third in the conference and second on the team in kills per set (3.67).

From 2019-2022, Vance tallied 779 kills in her time with the University of Toledo.  She helped the Rockets to the 2022 National Invitational Volleyball Championships after a 19-13 season. The Rockets advanced to the second round of the NIVC tournament to play Western Carolina after knocking off Clemson in the first round. The Michigan native played in 110 sets in all 32 matches and was third on the team with 282.5 points, 227 kills, and a .284 hitting percentage. Defensively, Vance was second on the Toledo squad with 88 blocks (65 block assists, 23 solo blocks).

SETTING SITUATION
Last weekend setter Patrycja Zielinska earned Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge All-Tournament Team honors as she tallied 74 assists, while averaging 9.24 assists per set and three service aces.

In the offseason, Temple added two highly touted setters, Lexi Yoza and Ava Blascziek. Both rookie setters saw action in the first weekend with Yoza adding 12 assists and Blascziek with 20. Notably, in Temple's win versus Lehigh on Sunday, Blascziek came off the bench in the second set to finish off the 3-0 victory and dished out 14 assists.

Third-year setter Magdalena Rogalska earned a 5-5 record as a starter in 2022. The Krakow, Poland native had 421 assists on the season. Like Zielinska, Rogalska has recorded 40 or more assists on multiple occasions last season. On Sept. 30, in a five-set win versus Tulane, Rogalska recorded 55 assists and followed it up with a career-high performance versus East Carolina with 58. On Oct. 30, Rogalska added 46 assists in the five-set win at Tulane.

SCOUTING DELAWARE STATE
With wins against NJIT and Siena, the Hornets almost completed a clean sheet but lost to Hofstra in four sets on Sunday night and find themselves 2-1 going into Tuesday's match versus Temple. Alondra Maldonaldo led DSU the first weekend of action with 36 kills and six blocks.

TEMPLE VS. DELAWARE STATE
The Owls and Hornets have played three times in their programs histories with Temple winning each match. The two schools first played in 1993 and the last played nine years ago at the Syracuse Invitational. In the match, Caroline Grattan led the Temple and the match with 15 kills, while freshman Izabella Rapacz totaled eight.
