Owls’ Gymnastics Flies to Auburn For Quad Meet

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls' gymnastics team will be on the road on Friday as it travels to Neville Arena in Auburn, Ala. to face off against No. 15 Auburn, Fisk, and Talladega at the Auburn quad meet. Friday's meet will mark the first time since 2019 the Owls will compete against an SEC program, the second meeting ever against Fisk, and the first against Talladega. The meet will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will be available on SEC+.
 
DONABEDIAN SHINING
Senior Brooke Donabedian earned two first-place finishes, helping the Owls to a season-high team score of 195.900 during the Jan. 21 dual meet victory over Towson. The senior competed in three events scoring 9.7 or better, including a pair of 9.875s to earn wins on the beam and floor. It was the first win on the beam of the season for the Maple Valley, Wash. native and the sixth of her career. For the floor win, it was the second of the season and ninth of her career.
 
ROAD TO THE NATIONALS
The Owls jumped from 61st to 58th in the Road to Nationals rankings after Week 3 when they scored a season-high 195.900 against Towson. The score marked the highest home opener score in school history, the highest January score in school history, the third-highest home score in program history, and the highest of any EAGL team this year. After four meets in 2024, Temple has averaged 193.538. Thus far, the Owls' best event after four meets is the floor exercise where they have averaged a 48.931 which the team 43rd in the nation. The other NQS national scores included Vault - 48.525 (58th), Bars - 48.194 (60th), Beam- 47.888 (65th).
 
VAULT
The Owls used nine gymnasts thus far this season on vault, with freshmen Hailey Best, Hannah Weklar, Amelia Budd, and junior Madison Dorunda seeing action on the apparatus for the first time in their careers. Fellow junior Summer Ruskey returned to the Owls' vault lineup for the first time since 2022.
 
The last time out on the vault, Temple earned a season-high 49.075 in which four of the six gymnasts earned career-high marks.  Led by junior Summer Ruskey's first career win on the apparatus with a 9.850, the Owls got career-best marks from seniors Mackenzie Aresta (9.825) and Renee Schugman (9.800), and freshman Hannah Weklar (9.775).
 
Notably, Schugman has been the most consistent performer, averaging 9.719 on vault this season as she's earned a 9.7 or better in three of the four meets.
 
BARS
During their last time out at home during the Jan. 21st meet versus Towson, the Owls scored a season high 48.675. Senior Cyrena Whalen and sophomore Emily Johnson finished one and two on the bars by earning team-bests 9.825s.
 
Thus far through four meets, junior Sarah Stallings has won a team-best two victories on bars. Stallings started out the season with three-straight 9.8s or better. In her career, the Raleigh, N.C. native has earned 18 scores of 9.8-plus and eight bars event championships.
 
BEAM
Against the Towson Tigers, Temple earned a season-high 48.975, .800 better than their previous best.  Four of the six gymnasts scored a 9.825 or better, including the event winner Donabedian who scored a 9.875.  Juniors Summer Ruskey, Madison Dorunda with senior Renee Schugman added 9.825s.
 
In her third career meet on the beam, senior Mackenzie Aresta scored a career-best 9.675.
 
After four meets in 2024, Schugman has been the Owls' most consistent gymnast as she's averaged a 9.788. Schugman has scored 9.8 in three of the four meets, including picking up a win at West Virginia earlier in the season.
 
FLOOR
Temple's floor team put on its best performance of the season two weeks ago home versus Towson as it scored a 49.175, tying the score from a week earlier.  During the meet, senior Brooke Donabedian led the team as she scored a 9.875. As a team, each of the six gymnasts scored at least a 9.800 or better. Highlighting that group, was 9.850s from freshman Payton Monk and junior Hannah Stallings. For Monk, it was the second time in meets she scored her career-benchmark, while Stallings earned her career-high for the first time.
 
The freshman Monk's 9.850 is her third 9.8 or better out of the first four meets. The Hanover Township native has averaged 9.825 in those four meets.
 
SCOUTING AUBURN
The Auburn gymnastics team is currently ranked No. 15 in this week's Road to Nationals rankings by averaging a 196.831 after scoring a 196.675 last Friday at No. 4 Arkansas.
 
On beam, the Tigers are ranked 10th nationally with a 49.150 average. The floor squad also is top 15 in the nation, holding down No.14 with a 49.363. Vault is 16th with a 49.175, and bars is 18th (49.144).
 
Cassie Stevens leads Auburn in the all-around, ranking No. 18 nationally with a 39.437 average. Senior Olivia Hollingsworth ranks No. 40 with an average of 39.287. On beam, senior Gabby McLaughlin holds ranks 16th nationally and averaging a 9.894.
 
SCOUTING FISK
In opening up year two, the Fisk Bulldogs have competed in two meets thus far, adding a win at the Florida Gators quad meet. During the meet, Morgan Price added three scores of 9.7 or better, including 9.850 on vault and a 9.875 on beam. During the Bulldogs next time out at the Southeast Missouri's seven team meet, Jones shined, scoring 39.400 in the all-around competition. In each of the four events, Jones rattled off a 9.8 or better, including 9.875 on vault and bars and 9.825 on beam and floor.
 
SCOUTING TALLADEGA
Talladega recorded its first win in program history last Friday, scoring a 190.175 to beat Winona State (189.025) but fell short to host Southeast Missouri (195.625) at the SEMO Tri-Meet in Houck Field House.  Kyrstin Johnson and Landyn Williams each had scores of 9.825 to tie for the highest scores for the Tornadoes.  Johnson's 9.825 tied for first on vault, while Williams finished third in the floor routine. Johnson also placed third in the all-around with a score of 38.025.
 
UP NEXT
The Owls return to action on Friday, February 9 when they return to the University of Pennsylvania for a dual meet with the Penn Quakers. It will be the second time this season Penn and Temple will have competed in the same meet.  The meet is scheduled for a 8:00 p.m. EST start.
