Owls’ Gymnastics Adds Season Highs on Two of Four Events in Friday’s Tri Meet at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Temple Owls gymnastics team earned 49s on the vault and floor during Friday's tri meet at the Towson, propelling them to a second-place finish. The Cherry and White earned its second-highest score of the season with a 195.525. Towson earned the tri-meet victory with a 197.425, while LIU followed in third place with a 193.425.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson led from start to finish on its way to the meet victory.
  • The Owls had 13 routines score 9.800 or better, including three on vault, three on bars, two on beam, and five from the floor.
  • With a 49.050 vault and a 49.250 on floor, it marked the second time this season the Owls scored 49s in two events in the same meet.
  • Seven Cherry and White gymnasts earned top 5 scores on the evening.
 
ROTATION 1 (BARS – 48.950)
  • The Owls began on bars as they scored a season-high 48.950.
  • Four of the six Temple gymnasts scored at least a 9.750, including sophomore Reese DeHaan with a 9.750, Hannah Weklar tied her career-high with a 9.800, and Sarah Stallings and Cyrena Whalen matched one another with a 9.875s.
  • All four gymnasts earned top 10 scores, while Stallings and Whalen tied for fourth place.
  • The Tigers Isabella Minervini earned the victory with a 9.975.
 
ROTATION 2 (BEAM – 48.275)
  • Moving to beam in rotation two, junior Madison Dorunda and senior Brooke Donabedian scored the lone 9.8s for their team.
  • Dorunda led TU with a 9.850, tying her season-high, which was also good for third place, while Donabedian earned her third straight 9.8 score on the apparatus.
  • Freshman Payton Monk and senior Renee Schugman had strong scores with 9.750 and 9.775, respectively.
  • LIU's Syd Morris won the beam with a 9.950.
 
ROTATION 3 (FLOOR – 49.250)
  • The Owls' 49.250 floor score marked a season-high and tied for the fourth-highest score in school history.
  • Five of the six Cherry and White gymnasts scored a 9.8 or better.
  • Freshman Payton Monk set a career-high with a 9.900, while Donabedian matched her teammates score. Monk and Donabedian tied for fourth.
  • The 9.900 score is the third straight for the Maple Valley, Wash. native Donabedian.
  • Towson's Tisler and Retoshia Halsell tied for the win with a 9.975.
 
ROTATION 4 (VAULT – 49.050)
  • Schugman (9.875), junior Summer Ruskey (9.825), and freshman Amelia Budd (9.800) each put together 9.8 routines, while senior Mackenzie Aresta and Weklar tallied 9.775s, and freshman Hailey Best in her third meet added a 9.725.
  • Schugman's score was not only her season best, it was her career-high score that earned her a second-place finish.
  • The 49.050 is tied for ninth best in school history.
 
UP NEXT
  • Temple will travel to NC State Friday as it competes against the host Wolfpack, Iowa State, and North Illinois. The meet is schedule to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
