EVANSTON, Ill. – On the first day of the 2024 Northwestern Duals, the No. 9 Temple fencing team knocked off No. 2 Notre Dame a part of going 3-3 overall. The Owls day one victories also included Denison and Lawrence, while the defeats came against No. 8 Northwestern, UC San Diego, and No. 14 Stanford.

MEET SUMMARY

Temple faced off against three of the top 15 teams of the USFCA Mid-Season rankings of the first day.
The Owls fell one point short, 14-13, against No. 8 Northwestern to begin the day, but turned around to defeat Denison and Lawerence in back-to-back matches, 18-9 and 24-3 respectively. The Cherry and White used that momentum in their fourth round of the day to defeat No. 2 Notre Dame in convincing fashion, 18-9. After the win against the Fighting Irish, TU fell in back-to-back matches against UC San Diego, 18-9, and No. 14 Stanford, 16-11.
Temple went a combined 90-69 on Saturday, with the sabre squad going 35-19, epeeists totaling 31-23, and the foil team recording a 24-27 record.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

Sabreists Alexandra Weinberg (8-3) and Zoe Turner (8-4) tied for the team lead with eight wins apiece. Eva Ventura (7-4) followed with seven wins, while Diana Tiburcio (6-2) tallied six.
Freshman Lindsey Minor (8-2) and graduate student Margherita Calderaro (8-4) combined for 16 of the epeeists 31 wins. Calderaro picked up three of her eight victories on the day during the 18-9 win versus No. 2 Notre Dame.
Anna Novoseltseva led all foilists with five wins on the day.
