PHILADELPHIA – Temple will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of one of its best teams, the 1998-99 Elite Eight squad, on Sunday, February 11 when the current Owls host Charlotte. The team will be recognized in a special halftime ceremony at the game.

Under the direction of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, the 1998-99 squad posted a 24-13 overall record while playing the nation's toughest non-conference schedule. Led by All-Atlantic 10 performers Pepe Sanchez and Lamont Barnes, the Owls posted a 13-3 conference record to win the East Division for the second straight season. Rhode Island would defeat the Owls, 62-59, on a buzzer-beater by Lamar Odom in the A10 Championship game, but the Cherry and White was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAAs.

As the No. 6 seed in the East Region, Temple defeated 11-seed Kent State, 61-54, before knocking off the third-seeded and No. 11 Cincinnati Bearcats, 64-54, to advance to the Sweet 16. Playing in the Meadowlands, the Owls blew past 10-seed Purdue, 77-55, to advance to their fourth Elite Eight under Chaney. Like its first Elite Eight in 1988, Temple would again face top-seed Duke. The Blue Devils proved to be too much in the rematch, shooting 60 percent from the floor to end the Owls' magnificent season, 85-64.

Sanchez and Mark Karcher were named to the All-Region team. The Owls' other starters that season were Rasheed Brokenborough and Kevin Lyde. Quincy Wadley earned Sixth Man of the Year from the A10 while Keaton Sanders and Ron Rollerson rounded out Chaney's eight-man rotation.
