No. 9 Temple Fencing Looks to Defend NIWFA Championship

PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Temple Fencing team looks to defend it 28th consecutive National Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships as begins postseason competition on Saturday, March 2, hosted by Drew University at the Baldwin Gymnasium.
LAST TIME OUT
The Owls are coming off a regular season a 25-16 regular season and closed out the regular season last week in McGonigle Hall with the Temple Invitational, going 1-4. Temple started the day with falling to No. 4 Princeton, but turned around in round two with a 16-11 win versus No. 11 St. John's. To end the day, the Cherry and White stumbled in its last three matches by three points or less. Starting with No. 6 Penn, the Owls fell to its cross-town rival 15-12, and then lost No. 12 Penn State, 14-13, in another Pennsylvania rivalry. In the meet finale, Temple came up short against No. 1 (DIII) Johns Hopkins, 15-12.
Individually, senior Margherita Calderaro (epee) led the team with a 7-2 mark as she picked up her 200 career victory in the process, while Anne-Mai Melles (epee) posted a 4-1 record. Anna Novoseltseva's 6-3 record led the foil squad. Anastasia Yankovskiy (foil) went 4-4 and Renee Oymann (foil) went 3-3. Saberist Alexandra Weinberg led the squad, going 5-4, and Eva Ventura (sabre) went 4-3.
LAST SEASON AT THE NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Cherry and White won the Olympians Trophy to take the team title and beat out 15 teams for the championship, with No. 1 (DIII) Johns Hopkins taking second and No. 4 (DIII) NYU taking third. The team swept the weapons titles for the third year in a row, winning the epee and foil titles for the fourth straight year. Then sophomore Anna Novoseltseva defended her individual foil title, defeating teammate Gretl Merges in the semifinals, while Margherita Calderaro took home her second career epee title. Novoseltseva, Merges, and Calderaro all earned NIWFA First-Team honors. Tiburcio earned NIWFA Second-Team honors and was named to the NIWFA All-Academic Team.
