Women’s Track & Field Records Historic Outing at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA — It was a highly successful weekend for the Temple Women's Track & Field program, who hauled in a program-record six medals at this weekend's 128th running of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The Owls saw strong results in field events, as the following athletes received medals for placing in the top five of their respective events: Cierra Crane, Amira Green, Nicole Castor, Inara Shell, Aliza White Vega, and Obiamaka Igwenagu. Crane made history herself in the college section of the women's pole vault, becoming the first Owl to win the event in the history of the Penn Relays.

How it Happened
Thursday
> Elsa Chan opened up the action for the Cherry & White on Thursday night in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, hauling in a new personal record in the event. Chan clocked in at 10:46.31, a 10-second improvement from her previous personal record.

Friday
> The Owls saw an action-packed day on Friday, with six field athletes and one relay team competing.

> Crane was the highlight of the day, taking first overall with a  height of 3.90 meters (12-9.5) in the college women's pole vault, winning the event for the first time in Temple history. Aliza White Vega also impressed in the event for Temple, placing fifth in the event at 3.60 meters (11-9.75).

> Temple's high jump duo of Amira Green and Nicole Castor impressed once more, as both finished in the top four of the college women's high jump division. Green led the way with a second-place finish in the high jump, leaping 1.75 meters (5-8.75). Her mark is an outdoor personal record and ties her all-time personal record. Castor placed fourth at 1.70 meters (5-7), a mark that tied her all-time personal record.

> In the college women's triple jump, Obiamaka Igwenagu placed fifth out of 26 athletes to earn herself a medal in the event. She leaped 12.21 meters (40-0.75).

Saturday
> In the women's triple jump championship division, Inara Shell represented Temple admirably with a final score of 12.62 meters (41-5), a new outdoor personal record. Shell placed fifth in the event to earn Temple's sixth medal of the Penn Relays.

Up Next
The Owls will have a weekend off from competition to prepare for this year's American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The three-day event (May 10-12) is set to take place at Park West Athletic Complex in San Antonio, Texas.
