Gymnastics Opens 2025 Season Facing WVU

1.3.25 | Women's Gymnastics

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University Gymnastics will kick off the 2025 season Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM by hosting the West Virginia Mountaineers at McGonigle Hall. The season-opener will be the team's Cause Meet.

VAULT
The Owls return eight vaulters from last season's squad, with some newcomers being inserted into the lineup. Temple as a team scored above a 48.125 in every meet in 2024 on the apparatus with a season-high 49.075 coming in a 195.900-195.325 victory over Towson.

Two Owls finished that meet with season-high best scored in vault: Payton Monk scoring a 9.775 and Summer Ruskey ending with a 9.850. Renee Schugman, along with Ruskey, ended 2024 with the top scores in the event on the team, each tallying a 9.875.

BARS
The Cherry and White will bring back five familiar faces to the bars in the 2025 season. Sarah Stallings and Reese DeHaan combined for 25 routines on the uneven bars last year with Stallings averaging a team-high 9.767 score. DeHaan posted her season-high of 9.775 in the 2024 EAGL Championships.

Hannah Weklar also saw time on the bars in last season's competitions. The now-sophomore competed seven times on the bars in her debut season posting an average of 9.850 points. The Owls' best performance on bars last year came on Senior Day when the team tallied a score of 49.125 to down William & Mary, LIU, and West Chester.

BEAM
Brooke Donabedian and Madison Dorunda are the anchors on beam for the Owls. Both return to the Cherry and White after earning Second-Team All-EAGL honors last year. Donabedian competed 13 times on beam in 2024 and finished her senior year with an average score of 9.766 on the apparatus. The Washington native tallied a career-high 9.925 on beam helping the Owls top Bridgeport last season.

Dorunda also competed 13 times on beam during her junior season. She ended the season with a 9.661 average score and a season-high of 9.850 coming in a win over LIU last February.

FLOOR
Temple will look to continue the ample success they have had on floor in previous years, especially 2024. As a team Temple set a new program record on floor with a resounding score of 49.575. Four different Owls finished the day with season-high scores, and all scores were above 9.875. Every member of the 2024 team that competed on floor will return to Temple for 2025.

Donabedian competed a team-high 14 times on floor in 2024 with Dorunda, Monk, and Ruskey following her with 13. Those three set career-best scores in the quad-meet win on March 10 scoring a 9.00, 9.925, and 9.925 respectively. Hannah Weklar also set a career-high in the same meet with a 9.875. The Owls had eight meets in 2024 where they tallied a 49.050 or higher on floor.

SCOUTING WVU
The Mountaineers come into 2025 after a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 last season and a 8-15 overall record. West Virginia and Temple competed last season, as well, and the Mountaineers found themselves victorious with a 193.8-191.9 score.

Senior Anna Leigh returns for WVU and will look to continue her success on bars. The Minnesota native averaged a 9.763 on the apparatus last season. The Mountaineers are led by head coach Jason Butts in his 14th season.

UP NEXT
Temple will return to action on Friday, January 11, at 1 p.m. ET for the Lone Star Challenge, as the Owls head on the road to the San Antonio Podium.
