Gymnastics Falls to West Virginia in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA - Saturday afternoon, the Temple Owls' gymnastics team fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers, 193.600-191.200. Fifth-year Brooke Donabedian highlighted the day for the Owls with her floor routine, finishing as one of the top performers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Renee Schugman led the Owls on vault with a strong 9.775, supported by Kyrstin Johnson's 9.725 and Amelia Budd's consistent 9.675. These performances helped Temple post a competitive start.
  • Mariella Brueck and Hannah Weklar tied for the team's top scores with 9.700 each, showcasing clean routines. Breanna Varano added a solid 9.450.
  • Brooke Donabedian's standout 9.700 on the beam and meet-high 9.825 on the floor anchored the Owls' performances in these events. Schugman also delivered on the floor with a 9.775, helping Temple close the meet on a high note despite earlier challenges.

ROTATION 1 (Vault - 48.375)
  • Johnson finished her routine with a 9.725. Her routine showcased strong execution and consistency, setting the pace for the event.
  • Schugman made key contributions, delivering Temple's highest individual score on vault, 9.775. Budd added crucial points to the team total with her steady 9.675 performance.
  • Weklar and Harmony Haro provided additional scores with solid routines, earning 9.700 and 9.500, respectively. Nikki Rengifo rounded out the lineup with a 9.425, helping to secure the team's vault total.

ROTATION 2 (Bars - 46.850)
  • Brueck and Weklar were the top performers on bars, each scoring a team-high 9.700. Their routines displayed precision and consistency, anchoring the lineup.
  • Varano made key contributions with her solid 9.450 routine, and this score helped maintain the team's momentum.

ROTATION 3 (Beam - 47.225)
  • Donabedian was the top performer on the beam, leading the Owls with a standout 9.700. Her routine was a highlight of the team's performance in this event.
  • Brueck and Robyn Dunne delivered key contributions, scoring 9.525 and 9.500, respectively. Their consistent routines provided crucial support for the lineup.
  • Dorunda, Schugman, and Johnson added additional scores, with Dorunda earning a 9.475, Schugman a 9.025, and Johnson an 8.925. Their efforts completed the team's showing on the beam.  

ROTATION 4 (Floor - 48.750)
  • Donabedian was the top performer on the floor, earning a team-high 9.825. Her routine was a standout, showcasing excellent execution and energy.
  • Schugman and Summer Ruskey made key contributions, scoring 9.775 and 9.750, respectively. Their performances strongly supported the team's overall floor score.
  • Dorunda, Weklar, and Johnson added additional scores, with Dorunda posting 9.725, Weklar 9.675, and Johnson 9.100. 

UP NEXT
Temple will return to action on Friday, January 11, at 1 p.m. ET for the Lone Star Challenge, as the Owls head on the road to the San Antonio Podium.
