PHILADELPHIA - Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored a career-high 34 points, including the game-winning free throw with 2.0 remaining, to lift the Temple men's basketball team to a 90-89, double-overtime victory over Charlotte at Liacouras Center on Wednesday. The win improves the Owls to a perfect 9-0 inside their home venue and moves them to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in American Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five straight points to start the game by senior Steve Settle III started Temple off right, and the Owls led for the majority of the opening 20 minutes.
- Settle III's layup at the 10:27 mark gave the home team a 24-14 lead, and the margin ballooned to as many as 13 points before the 49ers came back.
- Charlotte went on a blistering 17-2 run over a 4:13 stretch to take a 36-34 lead, before senior Shane Dezonie scored a traditional three-point play to cap the scoring in the first half and give Temple a one-point lead heading into halftime.
- Mashburn Jr. had a team-high 10 points for the Owls, who shot 50.0 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes.
- The contest remained close throughout the second half, with neither team able to grasp control. Temple led 58-53 with 11:06 left in regulation after a Mashburn Jr. three, then Charlotte took a five-point lead seven minutes later at 64-59.
- Free-throw shooting was the name of the game at the end of regulation, as Mashburn Jr. connected on four in the final 1:32, including two clutch shots with 12 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
- In the first overtime, sophomore Quante Berry connected on a three-pointer to give the Owls a 76-72 advantage with 2:26 on the clock.
- With the score tied again and under 10 seconds left, Berry drove the lane and made a floating jumper to put the Owls on top. The lead was shortlived, however, as Kylan Blackmon scored on a driving layup with less than a second left to force a second overtime.
- Charlotte's Nik Graves drained a triple with 3:19 left to give the visitors a two-point lead, before Mashburn Jr. came back down on the next possession and connected on a triple to regain the lead for Temple.
- Sophomore Zion Stanford was big in the second overtime, scoring six points including go-ahead free throws that put the score at 89-87 with 31 seconds on the clock.
- The 49ers tied the game again with two from the charity stripe, before Mashburn Jr. drove the lane and was fouled with 2.0 seconds left. His free throw put the Owls on top, and a last-second heave from Giancarlo Rosado was off the mark as the Owls secured the win.
- The back-and-forth game featured 15 ties and 14 lead changes overall.
- As it has done most of the season, Temple's bench played a huge role and outscored Charlotte's reserves, 29-5. Stanford led the way with 12 points off the bench, while Dezonie chipped in with nine before fouling out at the end of regulation.
- Mashburn Jr.'s 34 points eclipsed his prior career high of 33, set while at New Mexico, and also bested his season-high mark of 32 that he set in a home win over Tulane.
- In addition to his scoring exploits, Mashburn Jr. was one of three players with a team-high six rebounds -- Stanford and freshman Babatunde Durodola were the others.
- Settle III closed with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in 44 minutes of action.
- Graves scored a team-high 26 points to lead Charlotte, and also chipped in with eight assists against just one turnover.
- Temple returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 against East Carolina at Liacouras Center, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
