3.1.25 | General, Women's Fencing
MADISON, N.J. - No. 8 Temple Fencing opened postseason play in dominant fashion, securing their 29th consecutive NIWFA championship. The Owls outperformed 14 other schools at Drew University to claim the top prize. Senior foilist Anna Novoseltseva took home her fourth career NIWFA foil championship, while six Owls claimed top-10 finishes when all was said and done.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
The Owls' sabre squad secured their sixth consecutive weapons championship, while the epee squad claimed their sixth title in seven seasons. Foil earned a runner-up finish, falling just short of the squad championship for the first time in six seasons.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
Novoseltseva joined elite company on Saturday, becoming just the third fencer in Temple history to capture four individual NIWFA titles. She dominated the direct elimination portion of the foil competition, posting an impressive 60-21 touch score. Her closest bout came in the semifinals, where she earned a 15-7 victory over teammate Constanca Dimas, before closing out the championship with a 15-4 win over Hannah Duh of Brandeis.
Freshman Victoria Doroshkevich made a strong debut in her first NIWFA competition, earning a runner-up finish in epee. She advanced to the finals with impressive victories over Sarah Gresham (William & Mary) and Gala Krysmanovic (NJIT), both by a score of 15-8, as well as a 15-6 win against Amira Mutakabbir (Drew). In the championship bout, the Park Ridge, Ill., native put up a tough fight but fell 15-11 to Karen Bai of Tufts.
In sabre, senior Arwen Gormley delivered a strong performance, defeating Sasha Craine (Stevens) 15-7 and Kat Xikes (Brandeis) 15-11 to advance to the semifinals. There, she fell 15-11 to Anat Katz of Tufts, securing a third-place finish.
Off the strip, Gormley was also recognized for her academic excellence, earning a spot on the NIWFA All-Academic Team. The Neuroscience major achieved this honor with an outstanding 3.99 GPA.
Other top-10 finishes included graduate epeeist Caira Blake, who finished in seventh place, and junior Natalie Adams-Kim, who earned an eighth-place finish in foil.
UP NEXT
The Owls will now turn their sights to the Mid-Atlantic/South NCAA Regional, hosted by Drew University on March 8. Temple will be hoping to send the maximum of 12 fencers to the event, which serves as an important day in qualifying for NCAA Championships.
