  • Title:
    Graduate Assistant Manager

Temple University graduate student Dutch Gaitley is in his first season as Graduate Manager. Gaitley was a member of the 2010-11 Owls team after transferring from Monmouth University.

Gaitley’s job as one of the Graduate Managers means assisting with the many facets of the basketball program. For the 2011 fall semester, he helped in organizing the men’s and women’s team study halls and helped with any course work that was required from the student-athletes. He assists in every day preparation, whether that is practice, pre-game, post-game, donation requests for donors, alumni, etc., and coordinating the student-athletes schedules for classes. Also, he works with Director of Operations, Jeff Wilson, in terms of planning and organizing of road trips and assisting and arranging student-managers. Also, he is in charge of coordinating with perspective inquirers who would like to attend practice. Finally, Gaitley assists in receiving and reviewing any incoming perspective student-athletes videos or letters, and assorting them along to the assistant coaches.

With the help of the other Graduate Manager, Tyler Laurie, Gaitley has planned two unique experiences thus far for the 2011-12 men’s basketball team. First, in the fall, the Owls, with the Boys and Girls Club of Fairmount, came together and experienced the “Terror Behind the Walls” of the Eastern State Penitentiary. In the winter, they coordinated a surprise trip for the team which served as a Christmas present for the guys before they left campus to be with their families. The team went paintballing as a team-building exercise in South Jersey. These two experiences were the first of many that the graduate managers have planned.

Gaitley was granted a one-time transfer exception by the NCAA and was eligible immediately, instead of sitting out the customary season. The forward graduated in three years from Monmouth University, earning his bachelor’s degree in communication in 2009. After graduation he took one year of classes in the Monmouth University Real Estate MBA program, before deciding to transfer to Temple. At Temple, Gaitley is pursuing a Master’s Degree in sports management.

A native of Haverford, Pa., he was a 2006 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School where he played for Coach Paul Romanczuk.

In 88 games at Monmouth, he averaged 2.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.  Gaitley was a dean list student and won the Coaches Award following the 2008-2009 season. Also, he was a 3 year captain for the Hawks before transitioning to Temple University.

During his one year stint as an Owl, Gaitley made an immediate impact by becoming a founding member of “The Parliament”, a trio of Owl subs whose passion and enthusiasm helped Temple to an outstanding 2010-2011 season, in which they finished second in the Atlantic 10 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.  For his contributions to the team, Gaitley was honored with the Harry Litwack Award for sportsmanship, dedication, devotion and conduct on and off the court.  Gaitley was also recognized by the Temple Athletic Department as a recipient of the Enterprise Spirit and Sportsmanship Award, given annually to student-athletes who have demonstrated a devotion to the essence of sport through their acts of sportsmanship.

Gaitley has spent his summers preparing for his coaching career by working summer basketball camps at Temple University, Villanova University, Duke University, Wake Forest University, and the University of Notre Dame. Also, he has been the Camp Director for the past 3 years at Hoop Heaven which is located in Ocean City, New Jersey.
In the Spring of 2012, Gaitley will graduate from Temple University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management with a Degree in Sports Management.
