HAWKINS, COLLINS HONORED AT HERB GOOD BASKETBALL WRITERS AWARDS DINNER

PHILADELPHIA - Senior David Hawkins capped his fine career at Temple University by being named the recipient of the Palumbo Award at the Herb Good Basketball Writers Awards Dinner held Monday evening at Colleen's Restaurant. Hawkins, who tallied 709 points on the season, sixth best all-time at Temple, earned the award given annually to the Philadelphia Big Five's top scorer.

Hawkins was also named first team all-Big Five while sophomore Mardy Collins was selected to the second team all-Big Five. Saint Joseph's Jameer Nelson picked up his second straight Robert V. Geasey Award given to the Big Five's Player of the Year. Nelson also picked up his second straight Guy Rodgers Award as the city-league's top point guard.

Nelson and Hawkins were joined on the first team all-Big Five by Delonte West (SJU), Allan Ray (Villanova) and Steven Smith (La Salle). Joining Collins on the second team was Curtis Sumpter (Villanova), Jeff Schiffner and Tim Begley (Penn), and Pat Carroll (SJU).

Saint Joseph's was the recipient of the Jim Barniak Award given to the Team of the Year while the Hawks' Phil Martelli was presented with the Harry Litwack Award, which recognizes the Coach of the Year.
