PHILADELPHIA-Up two sets to zero, the Temple volleyball team (11-10, 4-4 A-10) seemed that it was well on its way to victory. George Washington (10-8, 3-3 A-10) had other ideas, however, as the Colonials defeated Temple 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 27-29, 13-15 on Friday night.
Yun Yi Zhang had a double-double with 17 kills and a match-high 21 digs. Ashley Carr also had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Caitlin Loudon posted 14 digs, while Ariel Pierre had 20. Elizabeth Prang dished a career-high 50 assists, while contributing nine digs. Jacqueline Cowden was on fire at the net, earning eight blocks to aid in TU's 14 total team blocks.
Temple was strong in sets one and two, easily taking a 2-0 lead going into the third set. The third set proved to be the charm for the Colonials, however, as the visitors surged ahead and edged out the sluggish looking Owls, 25-22.
Sets four and five were filled with Cherry and White ball handling errors, allowing the Colonials to eek out a 29-27 victory in game four and a 15-13 win in the final set. The Owls tried desperately to close out the match but could not overcome various miscues in both setting and attacking.
The Owls return to action tomorrow against Charlotte at 5 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
