PHILADELPHIA-Junior Yun Yi Zhang had 12 kills, while sophomore Ashley Carr contributed a career-high 10 kills to lead the Temple volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Manhattan in the teams season opener. The Owls dominated the Jaspers on the defensive end, earning 11 team blocks to the visitor's three.
Ariel Pierre had a match-high 20 digs, while Caitlin Loudon chipped in with 10. Setter Jackie Morrison dished 27 assists on the day. Sophomore blockers Anissa Whitney and Jacqueline Cowden teamed for 10 stops.
The Jaspers came out strong in game one, taking a 3-1 lead. The Owls weren't quiet for long, however, as they went on a 6-1 run to take a 7-5 advantage just minutes later. Temple continued to roll and led by as many as nine points before taking its first set of the 2008 season, 25-14. Yun Yi Zhang led the charge with five kills and two digs.
Game two began much like game one, with Manhattan taking an early 4-2 lead and forcing the Owls to take a timeout to regroup. It seemed to be just what Temple needed as it battled back to tie the game at seven. Just when it seemed that the Owls were on a roll, Manhattan went on a 6-1 run to make it 13-8. The Owls weren't ready to quit just yet and surged ahead to take the game 25-23.
Temple dominated game three, posting a 25-15 win.
The Owls return to action on Friday, September 6 when they host Bowling Green, Fairfield and Army in the Temple Invitational.
