Two-time defending A-10 Champions meet Blue Hens for first time in nine seasons

Game Notes

NEWARK, DE -
The two-time defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion Temple Owls open their 2009-10 season Saturday afternoon (noon/1210 AM WPHT) at Delaware in the first game of the four-game Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Owls host Siena in their home opener Saturday November 21 in the second game of the tournment before playing Virginia Tech (Nov. 27) and St. John's (Nov. 28) Thanksgiving weekend at The Palestra.

The Christmas season may be over, but fourth-year Temple head coach Fran Dunphy's squad will look to continue the celebration in 2009-10 with a veteran cast that includes one of the Atlantic 10 Conference's top post players in 6-9 junior forward Lavoy Allen and a strong perimeter cast led by senior guard Ryan Brooks.

Allen, a preseason first team All-Atlantic 10 selection, is the team's top returning scorer (10.9 ppg.) and the A-10's top returning rebounder (9.0 rpg.). Also a member of the league's All-Defensive team, Allen was an imposing presence in the paint blocking a team-high 50 shots.

Brooks, the first recruit of the Dunphy Era, had a solid junior season, averaging 10.6 points and 3.8 rebounds while leading the Owls in three-point percentage (59-144, .410). Like Allen, he provides solid defense and is one of the A-10's top lock-down perimeter defenders.

Dunphy will have to replace three senior starters in honorable mention All-America guard Dionte Christmas, a 2000-point scorer, 7-0 center Sergio Olmos, an All-A-10 Tournament selection and Semaj Inge, the team's starting point guard.

Argentine native Juan Fernandez, a 6-4 sophomore who joined the Owls in mid-season, looks to be the heir apparent at the point. Sophomore forward Micheal Eric (2.7 ppg., 2.1 rpg,) is a developing big man, who, at 6-11, will look to replace Olmos' presence in the paint while sophomores Ramone Moore (4.5 ppg.) and senior Luis Guzman will vie for a starting slot.

Junior Craig Williams will lead a talented and deep Owls bench.

This is the first meeting between Temple and Delaware since the Owls defeated the Blue Hens, 56-49, in the opening round of the 2000 Preseason NIT at the Liacouras Center on November 13.
