4:00 p.m. game to be part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon
Game Notes
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Fresh off a 76-56 season-opening win at Delaware, the Temple men's basketball team (1-0) travels to the nation's capitol to take on #19/20 Georgetown (1-0) Tuesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) at the Verizon Center. The game, part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, will be televised nationally on ESPN and can be heard on The Big Talker, 1210 AM WPHT.
Senior guard Ryan Brooks started off his final season with a career-high 23 points while falling one rebound short of a double-double to pace the Owl attack in Saturday's win. Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez was the only other Owl to score in double figures, tallying 14 points and dishing a game-high five assists.
Four other Owls scored seven or more points as fourth-year head coach Fran Dunphy's squad used a balanced offense and a stingy defense that held the host Blue Hens to 33% shooting in posting the win.
Georgtown (1-0) likewise opened its season on the road, defeating Tulane 74-58 on Friday night. The Hoyas, under the direction of John Thompson III, is led by one of the nation's best big men in 6-11, 247-pound sophomore center Greg Monroe. The only underclassman on the preseason all-Big East first team, Monroe led the Hoyas with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Green Wave.
The Owls lead the all-time series between the two Eastern powers, 21-13. Temple won the last meeting, 75-57, on November 22, 2004 when the arena was named the MCI Center. That spoiled the debut of Thompson, who is now in his sixth season at Georgetown. The Owls have won the last three meetings in the series with the last Hoya win, a 74-49 decision in the preseason NIT coming at the Spectrum on November 18, 1995.
