Kasey Ruth and Charise Young combine to score three goals for the Owls

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. –
For the first time in six years, and the first time under fifth-year head coach Amanda Janney, the Temple field hockey team will be playing in the Atlantic 10 championship game.

Senior Kasey Ruth netted two goals on the day while Charise Young chipped in with a goal of her own to lift the Owls (9-11) to a 3-0 win over Saint Joseph's (7-11).

Temple, who was looking to avenge a 4-0 loss to the Hawks earlier in the season, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Ruth put the Owls on the board with a goal just 6:22 into the first half. In what has become a recent trend for the team, TU once again capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. The goal was Ruth's third of the season. Classmate Kristen Wanner picked up the assist, her fourth of the year.

Neither team would be able to score again in the first half as Temple would carry the one-goal lead into halftime.

Young would give her team some breathing room in the second half. In a two-on-one situation, freshman Katie Briglia was able to connect with Young who sent the ball into the back the cage for a 2-0 lead. The assist was the first of Briglia's career.

With less than a minute left, Ruth would provide the final margin. For the second time on the day and the fifth time in the last two games, the Owls once again were able to take advantage of a penalty corner as Ruth picked up her second goal of the day. This time it was Young who picked up the assist, her team-leading 11th of the season.

Goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple picked up her fourth shutout of the season. The junior from Hanover, Pa., was stellar between the pipes as she made nine saves to keep the Hawks from mounting any type of comeback throughout the contest.

The Owls will face off against Richmond in Saturday's championship tilt. Richmond defeated UMass in the first semifinal game on Friday in overtime by a score of 2-1. The title game will be a rematch of last Sunday's final regular season contest, which was won by the Owls, 4-2.

Temple is seeking its first A-10 championship since 1994.

Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will take place on Garber Field on the campus of the University of Massachusetts.
