Temple To Host Defending NIT Champion Penn State Saturday

Parent-Child layup day to follow Owls' basketball game

Game Notes

PHILADELPHIA -
Fresh off a hard-fought 76-70 win at Western Michigan Tuesday night, the Temple Owls (5-2) host 2009 NIT champion Penn State (5-2) Saturday afternoon (4:00 p.m./OwlAccess) at the Liacouras Center. It is Parent-Child Layup Day on Saturday. Following the game, all kids ages 14 and under (with one accompanying adult) will have the chance to go on to the court to make a basket.

Temple, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Fran Dunphy, is looking to improve to 6-2 for the first time since the 1999-2000 squad won six of its first eight games en route to a 27-6 mark. Senior co-captain Ryan Brooks (13.6 ppg.) leads a balanced offensive attack with three players in double figures. Junior forward Lavoy Allen is second on the Owls in scoring (12.1 ppg.) while topping the squad and ranking fifth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in rebounding (9.4 rpg.).

Sophomore Juan Fernandez (11.3 ppg.) leads an unselfish Cherry and White squad with 28 assists while senior co-captain Luis Guzman (3.6 ppg.) tops TU in assist/turnover ratio (2.2:1). Junior Craig Williams (6.6 ppg.), who had a season-high 14 points in the Western Michigan win, has started the last three games in place of 6-11 sophomore Micheal Eric (5.2 ppg.), who sprained his knee against Ball State (Nov. 17).

Sophomore Ramone Moore (6.7 ppg.) and freshman Rahlir Jefferson (4.9 ppg.) provide the Owls a lift off the bench.

Penn State, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Ed DeChellis, is coming off a memorable 2008-09 campaign where the Nittany Lions posted a 27-11 record capped by a NIT championship. One of those 11 losses, however, came at the hands of the Owls, 65-59 on Dec. 6.

Junior guard Talor Battle, who leads PSU with a 20.1 scoring average, would like nothing more than to avenge that loss. Penn State returns two other starters - junior forwards David Jackson (9.9 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) and Andrew Jones (5.3 ppg., 6.0 rpg.) along with six other letterwinners. Junior forward Jeff Brooks (10.0 ppg.) also scores in double figures.

Temple has won the last five games in the series, and leads the series 58-32.
