#18/19 Temple Travels To Northern Illinois For Wednesday Game
12.29.09 | Men's Basketball
Owls look to extend win streak to seven against Huskies
GAME NOTES
DeKALB, IL - It has been a "December to Remember" for Temple Athletics, especially men's basketball, and the #18/19 Owls (10-2) will look to cap their 2009 year with a win at Northern Illinois (2-7) on Wednesday night (8:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT).
In their first game as a ranked team since 2001, Temple defeated Bowling Green, 63-39, Monday as the program "turned back the clock" with its first game at McGonigle Hall since 1997. The Owls showcased their tenacious defense to the capacity crowd by holding the Falcons to the lowest output by a Temple opponent since 2006.
The team's defense, which that ranks third in the nation in scoring (53.8 ppg.) and fourth in three-point percentage (.236), has propelled the Owls into the Top 20. Led by senior co-captains Ryan Brooks and Luis Guzman, Temple has controlled the tempo of the game on offense, and ranks fourth in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.3 ppg.). Brooks leads a balanced Cherry and White squad in scoring with a 15.5 average. Junior forward Lavoy Allen, a preseason first team All-Atlantic 10 selection, averages a double-double (11.0 ppg./10.6 rpg.) while sophomore guard Juan Fernandez averages 13.3 points and 3.8 assists per game.
Northern Illinois, under the direction of third-year head coach Ricardo Patton, is led by junior guard Xavier Silas (13.5 ppg.). Junior guard Darion "Jake" Anderson is the team's only other double figure scorer, averaging 11.0 points per game while topping the squad in rebounding (7.4 rpg.) and assists (25).
This is the first meeting between the programs.
