As Good as it Gets
If you're looking for quality competition in collegiate volleyball, it doesn't get better than two-time defending national champs Penn State. The Nittany Lions cruised to a 38-0 record last year, not even dropping a set until the national semifinal match which they won 3-2 vs. Nebraska before going on to sweep Stanford 3-0 in the championship match. Penn State is rolling along once again, so far compiling a record of 9-0 without a single set lost.
The Owls in 2009
Temple is 3-3 after playing in two tournaments so far this season. The Owls went 1-2 in their first weekend of play at VCU, and followed that up by going 2-1 at the Big 5 Tournament a week later. Temple dropped a tough, five-set match to Penn on the first day, but rebounded for a sweep of La Salle and a hard-fought, 3-2 win against Villanova.
Ticket Info
Admission to the match will cost $3.00 per person or $25.00 for a team wearing volleyball uniforms, jackets or similar clothing. Bertucci Hits 300
Now in his 15th season, Head Coach Bob Bertucci has reached the 300-win plateau at Temple. Already the winningest coach in Temple volleyball history, Bertucci has compiled a 300-159 record on North Broad, and earned his 300th win on Sept. 5 vs. La Salle. He is 652-347 overall and has taken home three A-10 Coach of the Year Awards ('97, '99, '02).
EEEE-Z
Yun Yi Zhang, known to her teammates as just “E,” is proving her status as a strong candidate for postseason awards with every match she plays. The junior outside hitter has already earned A-10 Offensive Player of the Week honors once this season.
Zhang's 6.17 kills per set currently rank first in NCAA Division I, and are first in the A-10 by close to three kills per set more than the second-ranked individual. Her hitting percentage of .312 ranks ninth in the A-10.
Pierre Earns First A-10 Defensive Award
Junior libero Ariel Pierre put up big numbers on defense in Temple's first tournament of the season, and was rewarded for her efforts by being named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 31.
All-Time vs. Penn State
The Nittany Lions hold a 13-4 advantage in the all-time series against Temple. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1977 with Temple winning 2-0. Temple and Penn State last met on Dec. 7, 2002 with Temple winning, 3-1 (30-24, 30-26, 26-30, 30-23).
Scouting St. Francis (PA)
