Owls-Minutemen renew rivalry in opener of men's/women twinbill
Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - One of the Atlantic 10 Conference's top rivalries will be on display Saturday afternoon as the #19/21 Temple Owls host the UMass Minutemen at the Liacouras Center (2:00 p.m./OwlAccess audio and videostream). The Temple women's team will host Saint Joseph's at 4:30 p.m. as this is the second of four men's/women's doubleheaders this season.
The Owls (14-3, 2-0 A-10) enter play winners of three straight and 10 of their last 11 games. Defense continues to be the constant for head coach Fran Dunphy's charges as the Cherry and White tops the A-10 in scoring defense (55.5 ppg.), field goal percentage defense (.373) and three-point percentage defense (.249), ranking among the nation's leaders in all three categories.
Offensively, senior guard Ryan Brooks continues to pace the squad with a 15.3 scoring average. The Owls co-captain needs just 14 points to become the 45th Temple player to eclipse the 1000-point plateau. Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (13.4 ppg.) leads the Owls and ranks second in the conference in three-point percentage (.427, 38-89). Junior forward Lavoy Allen (11.2 ppg., 10.1 rpg.) averages a double-double while providing strong interior defense (30 blocks).
The Minutemen (7-9, 1-2 A-10) have lost two in a row, and four of their last five games. Second-year head coach Derek Kellogg's squad is led by senior guard Ricky Harris, who ranks fourth in the A-10 with a 17.4 scoring average. Junior guard Anthony Gurley (15.1 ppg.) teams with Harris to give UMass the highest scoring backcourt duo in the league while freshman guard Freddie Riley (11.2 ppg.) also averages double figures.
Temple leads the series, 40-20, but UMass won last year's meeting, 79-75, in Amherst.
