Big 5 Hall of Fame, Owl Club Auction, Dollar Dog Day all part of men's/women's doubleheader
Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - It will be a busy and electric Saturday at the Liacouras Center when the #15/15 Temple Owls host city-rival La Salle Saturday afternoon (noon/espn2/1340 AM WHAT). Not only will it be the Seventh Annual Owl Club Auction and Dollar Dog Day, but also at halftime of the men's game Temple will recognize the three Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame inductees, including former legendary TU coach John Chaney. Immediately following the men's game, the Temple women will host St. Bonaventure.
Temple (17-4, 5-1) fell at Charlotte Wednesday, just its second loss over the past 15 games. The Owls are now tied with 49ers (15-5, 5-1) for second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings, one-half game behind Xavier (14-6, 6-1).
Senior Ryan Brooks, who leads the team and ranks ninth in the A-10 with a 16.2 scoring average, posted his sixth 20-point game with a 22 against the 49ers. Junior Lavoy Allen (10.7 ppg./10.0 rpg.) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds despite playing just 22 minutes due to foul problems. Sophomore Juan Fernandez (13.0 ppg.), who was still feeling the effects of the head injury incurred at Fordham, tallied just three points while senior Luis Guzman (5.3 ppg.) picked up the scoring slack with a career-high 14 points.
La Salle (11-9, 3-3), under the direction of head coach Dr. John Giannini, is led by the inside-outside play of senior guard Rodney Green and freshman center Aaric Murray. Green, the leading active A-10 scorer with 1,731 points, ranks second in the conference with an 18.6 average while ranking second with 51 treys. Murray, one of the top newcomers in the league, averages 12.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 rebounds per game. Senior forward Yves Mekongo also averages double figures at 11.3 points per game.
Temple leads the series, 65-40, but La Salle won the last meeting, 70-63, at the Liacouras Center on Feb. 26, 2009. Today's game is not an official Big 5 game.
