NEWPORT NEWS, Va - The University of Massachusetts earned the top seed for the 2010 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship, which gets underway on Friday, Nov. 5, at Geasey Field on the campus of the Temple University.
The Minutewomen (13-6/7-0) will take on fourth-seeded Temple (9-11/4-3), the host team, while No. 2 Lock Haven (14-6/5-2) squares off against third-seeded Richmond (10-9/5-2). Lock Haven defeated Richmond during regular season play to secure the second seed.
Temple is making its eighth-straight appearance in the A-10 Tournament, and last year the Owls advanced to the championship game before falling to Richmond. Junior Bridget Settles leads Temple with 13 goals so far this season, while senior Sarah Dalrymple has been impressive as the Owls' lone goalkeeper. Dalrymple tallied six shutouts in the regular season to lead the conference.
Massachusetts enters the Championship undefeated in conference competition having won its last nine matches including a victory over a Syracuse squad ranked No. 8 at the time. The Minutewomen are led by junior goalkeeper Alesha Widdal who leads the Conference in save percentage (.792) and goals against average (1.13).
Lock Haven looks to earn its first A-10 Championship title in its inaugural season with the Conference. The Lady Eagles are led by senior forward Amy Hordendorf who is the league-leader in goals (18) and points (41).
Massachusetts, which was ranked as high as 20th this season by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), defeated two nationally-ranked teams in Connecticut and Syracuse and is looking for its third tournament title in the last four years.
Richmond won its last four games to earn its 10th-consecutive tournament berth since joining the Conference 10 years ago.
The Championship commences on Friday, Nov. 5, with Lock Haven taking on Richmond at 11:00am, while the Massachusetts-Temple semifinal will begin at 2:00pm. The finals of the 2010 A-10 Championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 2:00pm.
The A-10 winner will host the champion of the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) in a NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, November 9, at 1:00pm to advance to the 2010 NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
